Ratings and viewership: Television networks are driven by ratings and advertising revenue. They may prioritize sensationalism and conflict to attract viewers, sacrificing balanced reporting in the process. This can result in a focus on controversies and scandals rather than substantive policy debates. 4. Time constraints: Television news programs have limited time slots, often ranging from just a few minutes to an hour. This time constraint can make it challenging to provide comprehensive and balanced coverage of complex political issues. 5. Lack of resources: Newsrooms may face constraints in terms of staffing, budget, and access to information. Limited resources can hinder investigative journalism and in-depth analysis, making it difficult to provide a balanced perspective. 6. Political pressure: Television networks may face pressure from political parties, candidates, or advertisers to present a particular narrative or suppress certain viewpoints. This pressure can influence the overall balance of reporting. It is important for viewers to be aware of these factors and critically evaluate the information they receive from television coverage during elections. Corporate Priorities and The Rise Of Lazy Local News It's a growing public consensus that the quality of local TV news is deteriorating. With its primary concentration on crime and violence it has become more depressing and less informative and as a result less desirable to the average viewer. This current format of presenting the most salacious events of the day under the guise of breaking news has become stale and monotonous. At the root of the news industry's indifference toward implementing any appreciable change is the monetary metamorphosis of the local affiliate ownership model. When we follow the money, we see a major shift in revenue streams for publicly-traded broadcast conglomerates. Retransmission fees, rather than robust journalism, have become the lifeblood of corporate TV ownership. Also referred to as “carriage fees” these are the amounts paid by cable and satellite systems to carry local channels. Quantity over quality is the new blueprint. The more affiliates under your belt the more revenue. Monthly checks from cable operators provide a source of consistent profits, rendering the pursuit of actual local-level journalism obsolete. While news directors of local affiliates may be responsible for implementing directives, it’s the national corner office corporate executives with decision-making power who ultimately dictate the industry's trajectory. We’ve all seen the notifications scrolling across the bottom of our TV screens directing us to: “Call your cable provider and urge them to keep broadcasting this over the air channel.” Translated into layman’s terms this means, “Tell them to keep those retransmission fees rolling.” Despite the best-intended aspirations of many local news directors to invest in well-compensated staff and actual journalism, these priorities simply don’t align with the profit-centric goals of the corner office. Consequently, newsrooms find themselves understaffed and under pressure, struggling to stay relevant and maintain some semblance of community connection. Expecting local news affiliates to rely on inexpensive police blotter content and weather can last only for so long.

What makes a reporter reel stand out? Our news director Brandice Bailey sums it up this way: "I always start by listening with my eyes closed. You've gotta make me open my eyes." Once the eyes are open, we're looking for... 🎤 Enterprise reporting. Breaking news is all well and good, but at this stage every reporter should be able to cover it. What are the stories/angles that would not have come to light had it not been for your reporting? What are the visually-challenging stories you had to MAKE visual and interesting? 🎤 Strong writing. Are your sentences short (8-12 words per sentence, one idea per sentence)? Conversational? Devoid of cop talk (fled on foot, pursuit, traveling at a high rate of speed) and clichés (speaking out, lucky to be alive, shots rang out)? 🎤 Confident and comfortable delivery. No "reporter voice" allowed...but please DO demonstrate a command of the subject matter. I saw a post from Susan Murphy that said it better than I ever could: Write it like a 5th grader, deliver it like a college professor. 🎤 Active standups and live hits. We look at a LOT of reels; the talking heads don't stand out, but the people who use their environment well and chase down public leaders for answers do. And unless you are doing the aforementioned chasing, please ditch the stick mic! It stifles your delivery and creativity. 🎤 Curiosity. Of everything on the list, this one's the hardest to teach. Do your stories go beyond the obvious? Are you able to help viewers understand a complicated issue? Are you pressing the people you interview for specifics? Are you as the reporter able to get in the weeds so you can keep your story out of them? 🎤 STORYTELLING! Sometimes there's a misconception that "storytelling" is a synonym for "feature." I love a good feature, but people who've mastered their craft know how to apply character-driven storytelling to ANY kind of issue they tackle. But if nothing else, think about this: Every station, every management team, every news director is looking for something different. So instead of trying to make the generically "perfect" reel, you might as well be yourself. Otherwise, how will you know the station's a good fit? There's no replacement for authenticity in this business.

Observe the content they produce—the stories they choose, the manner of coverage, the narrative, and the writing style. A bold step from Stuff to try its hand at traditional broadcasting. Having moved from print (Stuff) to radio (RNZ) to telly (TVNZ) I know just how tricky it can be to evolve storytelling across the different formats. TV requires a massively different mindset when it comes to writing. Even after five years in my 1News role I was still learning. That said, I think the new generation of journalists are better equipped than their predecessors to quickly adapt their craft as needed. I'm interested to see what sort of product is put to air. Good pictures are almost everything in television and Stuff will need to marshall significant resources to rival the well-established newsgathering operation at TVNZ. An increase in live interviews could be one way to reduce the reliance on resource-intensive packaged stories but that skill is not learned overnight. Leveraging the broadcast experience of the Newshub team who secure employment will be crucial. I really admire Sinead Boucher's brave and positive intent.
