The ability of brands to make people laugh was in the spotlight more this year at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity than ever before. Not just because as humans we're yearning for work that lightens the mood and gives us a break from the constant reminders of just how shit everything is right now, but because the festival added 'Use of Humour' to the Culture & Context subcategory across all Lions of the festival. So, I was paying extra close attention to the work that cut through to our collective funny bones... and I want to single one out in particular. As the Monday night awards were being dished out for the Audio & Radio Lions category, there was one entry that was played in the Lumière theatre that had the whole audience in stitches - Otter for Sandoz Deutschland. In 2013, 530,700 young Germans started apprenticeships. In the same year, just under 500,000 Germans were admitted for a University degree. The German apprenticeship system is legendary; millions of Germans never went to University but completed their ‘degree’ via an apprenticeship. What I’ve noticed/realised is that successful policies generally tend to be designed to support cultural practices that have been around for a long time. I think parallels can be drawn between the German system which has been around for around a millennium and the Igbo apprenticeship system. The basic principle of organising an event is to understand the clients goals and objectives, to understand the demographic of your audience & what success looks like for them, only then can you create something they will be happy with. The harsh reality of the barriers to ‘making it’ in the TV / Film / Media industry if you don’t have the means to support yourself in the early stages of your career means more and more people from working class backgrounds are turning their backs on the creative industries, and who can blame them. There’s so much appetite amongst production people to address this but with budgets squeezed and generally less work out there the ability to take on new talent and pay and support them appropriately is getting harder and harder. Fundamentally what is needed is more investment from govt and industry bodies but we all know what the current government feels about the creative industries - just look at the cuts happening across higher education for humanities subjects.

A group of celebrities have come together to champion T-levels, raising awareness of how T-levels bridge the divide between classroom and workplace, equipping young people with practical skills and real-world experience. Young people’s confidence is at an all-time low with just 7% believing they will land the job they want. The T-team is spreading the word about T-levels and the benefits they offer young people. A post-GCSE option alongside A-levels and apprenticeships, young people have a range of options open to them after finishing a T-level; from going into skilled employment, to starting an apprenticeship, or further study at university.
