JCOD is excited to announce the launch of its Independent Pretrial Services Pilot at Airport Courthouse yesterday, July 1st! JCOD court-based navigators, in purple polos, are now on-site everyday offering voluntary linkages to services to individuals in the courthouse hallways or upon their release from custody. JCOD can offer immediate connection to transportation, court reminders, and emergency housing as well as referrals to a wide variety of services including mental health, substance use treatment, education, employment assistance, and civil legal assistance. This JCOD pilot is the culmination of many months of effort and collaboration with Los Angeles Superior Court, health and justice county departments, the Defense Counsel bar, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, multiple City Attorneys offices, as well as invaluable input from many community-based organizations and justice-involved individuals. The next steps for JCOD will be launching voluntary linkages to services at other courthouse locations, as well as launching conditional releases. #LACJCOD #PreTrialServices #PurplePoloPower

Something seriously needs to change in residential OOHC. Criminalising children and young people through systems of abuse disguised as systems of care. Further partnership between residential services and police is generally the most common thought solution, but residential services and police need to implement shared risk matrixes for frontline care staff and invest more energy into developmental trauma training based on relational safety and connection. Another area of concern is the poor placement matching processes often perpetuated by external pressures from the Department of Communities & Justice (DCJ) with unrealistic response timeframes for NGO’s to accept residential care referrals of young people. This sees rushed and inappropriate decision making regarding placements which continue to ocur and often lead to escalation of placement breakdowns, and further fractured attachment for the young person.
A child would never be charged for throwing a TV remote or a plastic dinner plate in the family home, but in residential care this is extremely common and leads children into the criminal justice system at a pivitol age, where due to their circumstances are already disadvantaged and entrenched within the system. The use of cautions by police in these situations should be the first step, not charging. "An analysis of Victoria Legal Aid clients between August 1, 2019 and August 1, 2022, found that after two years in residential care, every second child was charged with an offence" https://lnkd.in/gK_-ka6d

Although they may use a different name, all California courts have some kind of a family court services office through which mediators and other professionals assist families experiencing disputes about custody or visitation in family court. These offices assist in addressing child safety, family violence, and conduct interviews with children, as needed. In some courts, they also assist with related issues such as guardianships, marriages involving minors, and adoption. The FCS program in CFCC works directly with local family court services staff through providing and supporting: Technical assistance, including consultation, support and site visits Mandatory training Research Identification of effective practices Policy development Legislation affecting the delivery of family dispute resolution services Statewide rules and forms of development Source: https://lnkd.in/giSBZ_qa #familycourt #familycourt #familylaw #californialaw #justice

I simplify the complex world of insurance to help you protect what matters most to CREATE, BUILD and PROTECT your legacy
This article isn't my usual focus on local business, but it marks the first step in bolstering law enforcement services in Grand Terrace, benefiting both businesses and residents. We still need to do much more because the current staffing level of one deputy/patrol unit per shift is inadequate. Much more needs to be done to ensure the safety and security of our community. #GrandTerrace #publicsafety #sbcsd

Sixty-one years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court established the right to legal counsel for anyone accused of a crime, requiring the state to provide an attorney for those who cannot afford their own. Today, the right to an attorney is understood as a cornerstone of fair and equal justice. But that right doesn't exist for people facing eviction or other non-criminal legal issues. While nearly all Los Angeles landlords have legal representation in an eviction case, the vast majority of tenants are forced to navigate the process alone. Yet without a legal advocate by their side, tenants are almost certain to lose their cases—and their homes. Does that sound like justice to you? For #PublicDefenseDay, revisit this piece in the Daily Journal by Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles Executive Director Silvia Argueta and Legal Services Corporation President Ronald Flagg about how a tenants' right to counsel can help prevent homelessness by protecting low-income families from unfair evictions. #RightToCounsel #Eviction

The Guardianship of Infants Act 1964 significantly reformed Irish family law by modernising the framework for custody and guardianship arrangements. It introduced the principle of equality between parents regarding the guardianship of their children, irrespective of marital status. This meant that unmarried fathers could now assert their rights and responsibilities towards their children. Additionally, the #Act provided the Irish Courts with clearer guidelines for resolving disputes related to custody, access, and guardianship, aiming to ensure the welfare and best interests of the child. Overall, the Act has had a profound impact on shaping family law proceedings and enhancing the protection of children's rights within the Irish legal system. Read more about the Act in our Blog: https://lnkd.in/eFZwFJF9 For more information or to make a referral, please contact info@treibh.ie or via our website - www.treibh.ie.
