Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Post

Meet the elusive mountain lions of Los Alamos! Hari Viswanathan, an environmental scientist at the Lab, used a motion sensor and DSLR camera to capture these beautiful creatures right in our backyard. 📸 Our Lab biologists collaborate with neighboring agencies, like Bandelier National Monument, to track the mountain lions’ movements with game cameras and radio collars. It's part of a long-term, multi-agency study investigating how large mammals respond to wildfire and forest restoration projects. #MountainLions #WildlifePhotography #LosAlamos

Perfect country for these big cats. Lots of game, canyons, and rugged cliffs to hide, hunt, and raise young. C'mon LANL, I am waiting for you to hire me and bring me back home to New Mexico. Starving for some REAL green chile.

Fun fact: Lions see in the infrared spectrum, which allows them to see mammals' glow - including human hunters, regardless of the clothes! IR light is not blocked by blankets. Test it out with your TV remote!
