In order to establish a harmonised regulatory framework on AI across the EU member states, the European Commission drafted a first proposal in April 2021. On 6 December 2023, the European Parliament and the European Council reached a provisional agreement on the Artificial intelligence Act, marking the first comprehensive set of rules on AI in the world. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘀: - Necessary governance for AI - Addresses critical concerns 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀: - Vague language - Potentially impractical requirements 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 The Act's requirement on explainability poses a significant challenge. How can companies comply when AI systems are inherently opaque? 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲: Black-box AI isn't inherently problematic. We don't expect perfect explainability from human experts (e.g., physicians). AI often outperforms humans in pattern recognition and other crucial areas. 𝗠𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: With proper human oversight, we should leverage AI's strengths, even if we can't fully explain its decision-making process. This is especially true in cases like drug discovery, engineering, and healthcare predictions, where the benefits are unimaginable. Thoughts? I am pleased to share the published report I recently worked on with the SCSP team. The Generative AI Report “serves as a strategic compass for navigating the complex terrain of artificial intelligence. Specifically, it includes targeted memos with sober analysis and robust policy recommendations crafted to provide a blueprint for adapting to our rapidly changing technological environment. These recommendations reflect a multidisciplinary approach, drawing upon insights from industry leaders, academics, and policymakers”.
