𝐎𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 It was an honour for Clara Richter to interview H.E. Rosalía Arteaga Serrano, former President of Ecuador. She is a social activist, writer, and the first woman to hold the President and Vice President positions in her country. Rosalía paves the way for countless women in Ecuador, in South America and globally. She experienced first-hand how male chauvinism can have horrendous consequences for an individual’s trajectory, women rights, and ideals: When she became President in 1997, the National Congress rewrote the constitution resulting in her being forced to give up her position. Since then, Rosalía relentlessly pursues the equality of women, social justice, and inclusion, for instance through Fundación FIDAL. Is there such a thing as a one-size-fits-all #feminism? 🤔 Not according to Pakistani-American attorney and activist Rafia Zakaria. In her provocative book, which is our pick for today's #BooksThatINSPIRE 📚, she argues that the #feminist movement has been centred around the experiences of white women, without acknowledging their privilege(s) and excluding the experiences of Black, Asian or Brown women. **Is the Future Female?** I’m Mexican. Yesterday, we witnessed the largest and most important elections in Mexico’s history. Regardless of my opinion on Claudia Sheinbaum's political views or whether I agree with her or not, Mexico has taken an incredible step by electing its first female president. In a country deeply rooted in patriarchy, having two women contenders and one male was groundbreaking. The electorate set aside gender biases, focusing instead on political views and voting for what they believed was best, irrespective of sex. This signifies a monumental shift in our societal and cultural landscape, showing that the future can indeed be female. As of 2024, there are 16 women serving as heads of government and 15 women serving as heads of state across the world. Notable current female leaders include Giorgia Meloni (Prime Minister of Italy), Sheikh Hasina (Prime Minister of Bangladesh), and Sahle-Work Zewde (President of Ethiopia). This demonstrates significant progress, though women still face challenges in political representation. While the number of countries that have ever had a woman leader continues to grow, the presence of women in top leadership roles is increasing at a slower pace. Historically, fewer than one-third of UN member states have ever had a woman leader. The progress being made, however, is undeniable and inspiring for future generations.

Continued growth in women’s representation at the top of British business but a step-change is needed by some companies to deliver gender balance. The representation of women on FTSE 350 Boards has increased beyond the 40% target, with almost two years to go until the end of 2025, and evidence there is room for more progress. I concur with the idea of including women in decision-making roles. However, it should not involve forcing them into positions solely to meet a gender quota without clear merit. This approach undermines the essence of gender equality. Instead, the focus should be on addressing foundational issues, enhancing capacity, and fostering informed decision-making.
