Know Your Employee (KYE) and Due Diligence are critical to the hiring process not only in Financial Services but also within the healthcare system. The recent news about a 29-year-old woman who was able to obtain employment as a nurse in three nursing homes using fake documents highlights the importance of verifying credentials. It's alarming that the procedure to verify her credentials as a nurse was missed. As we face a shortage of nurses, it's crucial to prioritize due diligence in the hiring process to ensure the safety and well-being of patients. #kye #duediligence Link to the article: https://lnkd.in/gaHPQjHs

We Need to Stop Violence Against Nurses!!! Violence against nurses in the workplace is rising, and healthcare employers are failing to address it. The combination of the two is hurting recruitment and retention, according to a report published Feb. 5 from National Nurses United. A vast majority of nurses — 81.6% — reported to NNU for the report that they have experienced workplace violence, with half stating they have seen instances of violence increase in the last year. "As a result, nurses are subjected to multiple impacts of workplace violence, including physical and mental injury," the report summary states. "Injuries, including both physical and non-physical, can result in long-term physical and mental harm, resulting in RNs requiring medical care, taking time off work, and/or considering leaving their jobs or profession altogether." In total, 60% of nurses say workplace violence has led them to change jobs, leave jobs or at least consider leaving the job or even the profession entirely, according to the report. And more than a quarter, 26.3%, feel violence has increased significantly in the last year alone. #nursing #violenceprevention #hospitals

Before the pandemic, healthcare workers faced a disproportionate percentage of workplace violence. Nearly three-quarters of all nonfatal injuries related to workplace violence in the US occurred in healthcare facilities. At the same time, nearly 50% of members of the American College of Emergency Physicians / Emergency Nurses Association were assaulted, with 70% of emergency room nurses reporting being hit or kicked on the job. These numbers only got worse during and after the pandemic. Almost one-third of registered nurses in the U.S. said they face increased on-the-job violence due to staffing shortages, changes in the patient population, and restrictions for visitors. In one quarter alone last year, 5,000 nurses reported on-the-job assaults. This comes to two nurses being assaulted every hour, or 57 assaults per day!

The Courage to Speak Up: Transforming Challenges into Safer Healthcare A recent harrowing incident at Blackpool Victoria Hospital has underscored the vital importance of vigilance and integrity in healthcare. Nurses Catherine Hudson and Charlotte Wilmot engaged in reprehensible conduct, compromising patient safety for their convenience. This incident, while deeply disturbing, also highlights the crucial role of speaking up against wrongdoing. The student nurse who reported the misconduct displayed extraordinary courage and ethical fortitude. In an environment where hierarchy often silences voices, this act of bravery not only prevented further harm but also served as a beacon of integrity in our profession. This case is a stark reminder that patient safety is paramount and must be guarded against any form of compromise. As healthcare professionals, our duty extends beyond treatment to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all patients. We must foster a culture where speaking up is not only encouraged but expected. This means supporting those who raise concerns, irrespective of their position. Institutions like Cleveland Clinic London are leading the way in creating such cultures. Let's take a moment to commend the bravery of the student nurse who stepped up. Their actions exemplify the kind of ethical responsibility that is the backbone of quality healthcare. As we reflect on this incident, let us recommit ourselves to uphold the highest standards of patient care and to support those who speak up for the vulnerable. The safety of our patients and the integrity of our profession depend on it. #HealthcareEthics #PatientSafety #SpeakUp #leadership https://lnkd.in/eW_Fj9dm

Well done that courageous student nurse for speaking out. Well done Blackpool Victoria hospital leaders for hearing and responding. Health and social care needs more courageous people who are prepared to put their heads above the parapet by speaking up and more leaders (and regulators) who are sufficiently courageous to listen and act in the best interests of those they serve.

Some good news. According to Altrarum, health care added 70,900 jobs in August 2023. With a significant upward revision to July’s job growth, the two-month increase of 143,900 is the largest since the initial recovery from the COVID-induced recession. August’s health sector job growth was led by growth in ambulatory care settings, which added 39,900 jobs, while hospitals added 14,500 jobs. Nursing and residential care facilities added 16,500 jobs in August, with growth occurring in both nursing homes (8,900 jobs) and other nursing and residential care settings (7,600 jobs). Exciting to see the uptick across all sites of care. #healthcarestaffing #oneshc
