#ThrowbackThursday to 1923 when The Avery & Loeb Electric Company started Columbus' first radio station, WPAL (now known as WTVN). -- What started this? The electrical industry was booming, and many innovative products came on the market. One of the most influential was the radio. While it would later draw in millions of listeners across America, the medium only had a handful of stations nationwide by the late 1910s. However, as radio broadcasting started to captivate audiences with entertainment, the demand for the radio grew exponentially. Arthur Loeb and Oscar Avery noticed this trend and began to sell radios to their central Ohio customers. But there was one problem - there wasn't anything to listen to locally. So, they decided to start Columbus' first #radiostation, WPAL. The business owners recruited H.V. Akerberg, a radio prodigy, to help launch the station. Before WPAL, Akerberg is credited with sending the first radio transmission for disaster relief in history during Ohio's "Great Flood of 1913" at just 15 years old. Though WPAL eventually evolved into what is now known as WTVN, the legacy of innovation continues at Loeb Electric by offering many market-leading products and services.
