I think people know I hate sharing bad news about Limerick, but this cannot be swept under the carpet. Problems never get solved by being ignored. As we face into our first ever election for an executive mayor, an honest look at the problems the new mayor will face and hearing ideas to resolve them is ever more important than ever with this news. We are now 3 years on from when the last Limerick development blueprint was in preparation. This troubling news report ono commercial vacancy shows what was agreed then is simply not working. Remember two important points of reference:- Firstly, Meath is showing occupancy of 10.1%. Secondly, back in 2023 (closer to COVID shutdown), Limerick's vacancy rate was 17.2%. Roll on a bit and instead of improving, two stats to now take in. Newcastle West (supposed to be our only "Level 2: Key Town" according to the national priority criteria) is the worst hit at a whopping 23.2% commercial vacancy. The situation in the city centre (supposed to be the beating heart of our region) can be no source of comfort to politicians looking for re-election - showing 19.8% vacancy - remember Meath is 10%. We surely need a change of direction quickly to stop the bleeding before it is too late. https://lnkd.in/e_fcBT6b

On September 17th, we’ll be officially launching our campaign at the Civic Theatre in Auckland! Our Campaign Launch is three weeks from the start of voting and just under five weeks from Election Day. This event is an important opportunity to come together and celebrate all the work we’ll be doing to spread our message across the country over that final stretch before Election Day. So many of you are already hard at work – think of this as a celebration of what we’ve already done to this point and an even bigger springboard for the final weeks. If we’ve learned anything on the campaign so far it’s that our message is really sinking in. Polls have us growing momentum on a weekly, if not daily, basis. Cutting wasteful government spending, eliminating the onerous regulations that restrict New Zealand’s industry, and ending the divisive co-governance undermining our national shared identity - these are all ideas that we want every Kiwi to know we stand for. Or in short? Fresh thinking. Real change. But we need to come together over this final stretch of campaign season to make sure our message is heard loud and clear. https://lnkd.in/gnYqQxMk

According to a new economic impact study from Tulane University professor Toni Weiss, the total direct and indirect impact of Mardi Gras on the New Orleans economy is $891,202,780, which equals 3.1% of the New Orleans gross domestic product. Weiss calculates that the net fiscal benefit accrued to the City of New Orleans as a result of staging Mardi Gras, including franchise value, is over $28 million, and that the city’s return on investment is $2.64 for every dollar spent. In addition, the Carnival season generates more than $14 million in state tax revenues. #EconomicImpact New Orleans & Company Read More: https://bit.ly/48lXmeW

We know what the problems are. And we know what the solutions should be. Unlocking place potential needs to start with good place leadership and collaboration across multiple groups.
"John Lewis Partnership chair Dame Sharon White has called for a Royal Commission on high streets, but town centre solutions must be locally inspired and driven – and there is plenty of good practice to share, argues expert Graham Soult." I'm delighted to have been invited to write a column for industry bible Retail Week, drawing from my positive experiences of working in #Durham and elsewhere 👇 #highstreet #highstreets #retail #evolvingnotdying Institute of Place Management High Streets Task Force

This EFRA select committee Inquiry into Urban Green Spaces is great news 👏🏼🌳we have been calling for an 🏢Office for Green Spaces to overcome structural issues that hamper delivering the cross-government working needed in planning, environment, treasury, net-zero, health to maximise green spaces. Check out our press release & this comment 👇🏼 "This inquiry by the influential EFRA Select Committee is an important opportunity for our sector to set out the evidence and crucial need we have to grow our urban green spaces. With 30 million UK gardeners and many more who love and use our green spaces, we need to ensure we maximise their value. Urban green spaces deliver huge social, economic and environmental benefits. The HTA has long been calling for politicians and policy-makers to give greater recognition of the value of environmental horticulture, not least because we deliver £28.8 billion in GDP and support 674,000 jobs in the UK. We have set out publicly a number of asks already - including establishing an Office for Green Spaces - to deliver the cross-government and joined-up policy-making we need to deliver real change."
🪧Today, the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee has launched an Inquiry into Urban Green Spaces. 🌳🌇 We have been actively engaging with parliamentarians and policy-makers in calling for a greater focus and attention on the value of urban green spaces, so this news is very much welcomed. For further details, our response and call for evidence read on: https://ow.ly/2Nn050PNnmR

Wales is poised for an economic revival with the UK's post-Brexit investment plan. Focused on regional growth, the £20M for Denbighshire and Anglesey's freeport are key. Yet, critics doubt the wealth gap will close. With high-speed internet rollouts, the digital divide is narrowing, but challenges remain. As elections near, the effectiveness of these policies is under scrutiny. Will this truly level the playing field in Wales? Share your thoughts. #EconomicRevival #Wales #DigitalConnectivity #RegionalGrowth #LevelingUp Original article: https://lnkd.in/eEQxS4Jx

'Empty shops, high crime and a lack of opportunity – no wonder retailers have deserted town centres such as Middlesbrough. There are plenty more like it. Sadly, the general election won’t make much of an immediate impact' Middlesbrough’s faded retail fortunes reflect the town’s other problems. Empty shops to an extent reflect high levels of economic inactivity and violent crime stats that are among the worst in the country. Lack of disposable income among many people and problems such as antisocial behaviour are hardly conducive to drawing in big retail names. So as a general election nears, what difference might the parties’ manifesto commitments make in Middlesbrough, where the retail vacancy rate is at a reported 23.7%?
