If you are lucky enough to be a part of a rural community that still has a hospital, and if you are particularly lucky enough to have that hospital still deliver babies, take a moment to consider what it would be like if that hospital did not exist, or if it no longer delivered babies. How much longer would it take for you or your family member to receive care in a crisis? How much further will an expectant mother need to travel for maternity care and delivery? Then, take a moment to imagine the economic impact of the closure of that hospital, on the overall community. If you are not involved in advocating to keep care local, please consider how you might begin to consider it. #ruralhealthcare #ruralcommunities
Logan Regional Medical Center, located in Logan, West Virginia, is crucial to keeping residents in this small community healthy from the moment they are born. At a time when maternal care is disappearing in rural areas, it has three labor suites and a nine-bed nursery. LRMC, along with other rural hospitals across the country, is a cornerstone of the community it serves. Faced with unique challenges, however, these hospitals are dwindling in number -- and proposals by some in Congress threaten to lower their numbers even more. The health and care system in England must shift its focus away from hospital care to primary and community services if it is to be effective and sustainable. Despite successive governments repeating a vision of health and care services focused on communities rather than hospitals, that vision is very far from being achieved. This research found that to achieve the vision, political and other national leaders will need to completely shift their focus away from hospitals towards primary and community health and care – and all policies and strategies must align to that focus. #nhsengland #nhs #healthcare #primarycare #acutecare #communitycare

Expertise in behavioral health policy, practice, and system redesign. Accomplished practitioner, educator, and leader committed to racial equity and social justice. Current doctoral student at Johns Hopkins University.
This is definitely a step in the right direction and I commend the Healey-Driscoll Administration on their efforts, but it does raise some questions: 1. Why isn't there parity between medical and behavioral health hospitalizations? Shouldn't the focus be on a person's needs post hospitalization regardless of where they're discharged from? 2. What happens after the medical respite stay? Are there direct pathways to housing or do individuals return to the same living conditions? 3. How will the pilot ensure equitable distribution of resources, given the inherent inequities in the referring systems? #homelessness #housingfirst #addiction #mentalhealth #behavioralhealth #equity #racialequity #recovery
The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced a $5.2M grant providing individuals experiencing homelessness a safe space to recover after a hospital visit. The Medical Respite Pilot Program will offer 40 beds of temporary housing with clinical support while program participants receive assistance in finding suitable long-term housing. The program will help reduce healthcare costs and utilization, hospital capacity, and housing outcomes. “We know that there are many factors that impact a person’s ability to access and recover from care,” said Lt. Governor Kimberley Driscoll. “This Medical Respite Pilot Program is an innovative way for us to target the different elements that affect a person’s health and wellbeing and lets us connect them to needed services.” https://lnkd.in/e4QcJTw4

🚨 Important Read: "A Hospital’s Abrupt Closure Means, for Many, Help is Distant" http://bit.ly/3SRuHtv The closure of Madera Community Hospital in California is a stark reminder of the fragility of hospitals and health systems, especially in rural areas. This echos concerns we've highlighted in our own finance survey findings for Minnesota. They are a warning of what could happen anywhere, including here in Minnesota. 🏥 In Minnesota, our hospitals and health systems face similar challenges. Our latest finance data shows that without real change, patient access to care is at risk as it is in other parts of America where communities are left without essential healthcare services: https://bit.ly/3QHrWYN We need to ensure sustainable funding and support for our hospitals. The health and well-being of our communities depend on it.

3/4 of hospital board members have no clinical background. Given this lack, how are hospitals supposed to effectively conduct quality- and performance-improvement efforts? Three tips: 1. Hospital and health system board members must do more than just approve budgets. They need to help establish the organization’s goals, make strategic decisions, and oversee performance while building relationships with key stakeholders. 2. Board members need to understand the value inherent in quality and performance improvement endeavors. 3. Board members must thoroughly understand the communities and patients they serve. #HospitalBoard #HealthcareLeadership https://ow.ly/Y08950Q6w41

Helping FQHCs, public health departments, and other health nonprofits win more grants, gain greater strategic clarity, and meet community needs. Writer. Facilitator. She/her.
Exciting news - #Congress has negotiated a funding #deal and it includes funding Community Health Centers! Now they need to pass it - by this Friday, March 8! If you contacted your congressperson to advocate for this health center #funding, thank you! If you haven't yet had a chance, please take time today - our Wednesday Health Center Day of Action - to reach out and get this funding across the finish line! Your US House Representative and Senators need to hear that this funding bill deserves their vote; you could even remind them how many of their constituents rely on #communityhealthcenters for care. For instance, last year Community Health Centers served 31.5 million patients in urban, suburban, rural, frontier, and island communities in every state and territory. This translates to 1 in 11 Americans across over 1,400 health centers at nearly 15,000 locations. I think we can all agree, these are not insignificant numbers. Will you be part of the final push and call your members of Congress today to let them know that thousands of their constituents depend on a #bipartisan, long-term funding for health centers? If so, check out the link here: https://lnkd.in/g5_z2ZJe #valuechcs #healthcenters #fqhcs

They report that urban hospitals and physicians gain an average of 2.6% and 1.9% in revenues and payments after a state joins the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact. This is the regulatory mechanism, now in place in 30-plus states, that paves the way for providers to easily obtain medical licensure across state lines. #telehealth #licensure #access
