Should you get professional help with your podcast?
It's not for everyone, and of course - there is a cost.
But you get two big ticket items in return. Number two is the biggy.
1) Polished sound. We have the equipment, software and skill to make your podcast sound a hell of a lot better. Balancing room tone, removing the air con, mouth clicks, plosives (those pesky mic pops on the 'p's), in an endless world of audio content - you want to be putting your best foot forward with high quality audio - if you are a brand, this is essential.
2) Craft. Hard to sum up in a LinkedIn bullet point, but if the sound is the science, think of craft as the art. This could be getting a one hour interview down to 30 minutes without it sounding edited, that's craft. Using timing and music to enhance a moment, that's craft. Taking hours of audio and creating a trailer is one of my favourite jobs, and that's most definitely craft.
If you're not ready for professional help but want to hone your skills in crafting a podcast trailer, below are the steps I take when creating one:
🎙️ Take time-coded notes of great moments (I usually do in real-time during the recording if I can - just short hand is fine). Don't think you will simply remember them, you won't
🎙️ Isolate these moments and put them aside
🎙️ Look to group themes and use the content to reinforce the narration and vice versa
🎙️ Keep it authentic, look for at least one moment to break with a mistake, an off mic remark, something unexpected or funny - also a great point to change music, tempo or script direction
🎙️ Put together an initial assembly of the edit and walk away, sleep on it, or tackle something completely different
🎙️ Return with fresh ears and listen again from the start - listen all the way through at least once before making any changes or decisions
🎙️ See if you can trim it down a bit. It's almost certainly longer than it needs to be. Carefully peel back some layers until it's just enough. Remember that ultimately it's for your audience, not for you
I hope this helps and of course, if you'd like to see what professional help could look like for your podcast, get in touch!
