ESG RATINGS AND STOCK PRICE VOLATILITY: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS AMIDST THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC This study, recently published in our journal Corporate Ownership and Control, grounded in the framework of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) integration theory, systematically explores the relationship between ESG scores and stock price volatility of Chinese enterprises during the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing a multivariate linear regression model, it explores how ESG ratings influence stock price dynamics across different sectors. Findings suggest a negative correlation between higher ESG ratings and stock price volatility, indicating ESG as a mitigating factor. Additionally, the study examines the moderating effects of company size and industry variations on this relationship. Have you had a chance to read our 2023 SFMI Summary Report? In the coming weeks, we’ll delve into the report in our SFMI Insights series to explore strategic and operational trends in the FM industry to keep you informed. First up is the change in partner scores over time for our strategic criteria. Two key insights are: 🌱 ‘Sustainability Framework’ has remained a high scoring area – FM providers have continued to build their sustainability frameworks to create more systematic and process-driven methods of managing a range of ESG topics. This has led to improved trending of disclosure from businesses, hence the scores have remained strong! The SFMI sees the Sustainability Framework as a core Governance requirement for businesses to drive systematic approaches that help to embed sustainability across the organisation. 🌱 Reduction in scores for 2023 – this is due to the SFMI raising the bar in the criteria as businesses are faced with tightening regulatory requirements. For example, we increased the difficulty of ‘Risk Management’ to represent the need for businesses to embed climate risk in their finance teams and conduct scenario analysis on climate-related risks to business.
