DRT is a mobility service that requires customers to provide services in the form they want. Nevertheless, some companies argue that users should adapt to their form of service provision. For example, there are companies that do not operate a call center and only provide services through apps. Many digital platform service companies do not operate call centers where people answer calls except for chatbots. The biggest reason is that the cost increases significantly. However, isn't it another type of violence to ask the elderly who have difficulty adapting to digital devices and the underprivileged who have physical disabilities to adapt to services? I think the basic attitude of On-Demand Service is to create a more accessible app and operate a call center for the last user. DRT companies that are supported by government subsidies and play the role of public transportation should also do their best to ensure that all users can use it without inconvenience. For companies that started their businesses aiming for innovation, keeping the essence of the service philosophy they initially established should be considered a higher priority than making money. At least, Studio Galilei would not forget the philosophy of the early days of its start. I would like to send my support to all DRT companies with the same philosophy, including ioki and Spare. 😉

Quite an insightful article on microtransit/bus on-demand. The authors are of the view that instead of focusing on “why on-demand/micro transit doesn’t work”, more efforts should be focused on “how to make it work”. The reality is that we need innovation in urban mobility, if public transit is to remain relevant in the face of evolving human travel behavior. Micro-transit not only offers flexibility in deployment of public transit systems, it also provides options and convenience to public transit users. However….scaling micro-transit to the same level of fixed-route public transport comes at a huge cost. For transit authorities, how this cost is defrayed in the short to medium term will always be a sticky point. #Publictransport

Why is transit data so valuable? It is! Especially compared with data about other transportation modes. Consider: you’re heading to work, to the store, or to see a friend. If you’re walking or biking or even driving, especially if it’s a familiar trip, you probably don’t seek out detailed directions or up-to-the-minute information on conditions before beginning. You just go! But if you’re taking some form of transit, it may be a good idea to use a travel-planning or mapping app: to make sure the train is operating normally, or to check that the bus is coming on time. Transit can be complicated, especially in large cities. It may be hard to understand how a system works, or what services are available, particularly if you’re a novice user, a visitor, or in an area of infrequent service. Where do I get the train? Where does the bus go? When and how do I pay? How can I make sure the timing will work to transfer? What happens if there’s a detour, or a diversion, or some other unplanned event? If I miss the bus or train, are there alternatives? What if there are no alternatives? Without the answers to these questions, transit riders can be very vulnerable. But with trustworthy transit data and reliable planning apps at their fingertips, riders are in control, and can figure out how to get from A to B in the way that works best for them, given the systems and services available. This is the core mission of the General Transit Feed Specification maintained by MobilityData. Still, I think we have opportunities to make transit data more valuable. Transit isn’t just hard to navigate: it’s hard to operate. Many systems are making smart, innovative use of data to operate their services better. Specifications like TIDES and TODS, also managed by MobilityData, can enable more effective, efficient operations, maintenance, and planning. We can go beyond even that. Today, operators (especially in the public sector) can often collect only limited – or even no – information from or about their own riders. Safeguards make sense, but how can we protect privacy while taking the opportunity to provide individual riders with customized directions and information – especially as personalization becomes the norm in other sectors? If we can answer this, we can move from our present, in which transit operators deploy data so that existing services can be better used and more efficiently provided, to a future in which transit services are based on a much more sophisticated understanding about what riders actually want. Teaching anonymous “riders” how to navigate the current system is hard enough, but imagine the possibilities if we can truly learn from our riders, and use technology to meet the demand in brand-new, personalized, dynamic ways, perhaps with completely different service and business models.
