At Executive Leaders Network (ELN) events, we like to tackle the big issues that leaders are actually facing as well as exploring opportunities for the future. ELN's host and moderator Peter Dorrington responds to our coffee break questions.
❓What challenges do you see as key for CIO’s and CISO’s in 2024?
💡Digital transformation remains high on the list of executive priorities yet with the rapid and ongoing changes in the wider economy they continue to demand that CIOs and CISOs do more with less; less time, money, risk, complexity and people.
Faced with a multitude of objectives and an array of potential solutions, it is incumbent on CIOs and CISOs to identifying the priority use cases and then deliver a successful outcome - and to do so quickly. Whilst the need for innovation is strong it must come with a results-orientated strategy that is aligned to the businesses goals, as well as consolidating and optimising new technology investments.
❓What is the role of AI for CIO’s and CISO’s in 2024?
💡Of course, the potential of AI is dependent upon the data it learns and works with. Accessing timely, accurate and comprehensive data securely remains a major challenge; the adage about ‘garbage in, garbage out’ still applies, especially when many of those currently experimenting with AI don’t fully understand its capabilities and weaknesses. So, CIOs must play a leading role in establishing effective governance of AI projects in their organisations.
However AI is increasingly being used by criminals and bad actors to enhance their illegal activities – vastly improving the sophistication and impact of attacks. We just need to look at the role ‘deep fakes’ have played in some recent data breaches or ransomware attacks to begin to see the scale of the task ahead.
❓In the face of current challenges how can cybersecurity leaders strengthen their programmes?
💡According to Gartner, many security and risk leaders now recognise that significant disruption is only one crisis away and implementing strategies, such as Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) is a priority for many enterprises as they seek better security frameworks.
CISOs, and those entrusted with securing our businesses and the wider community, are in a constant battle against both internal and external threats played out on a global stage.
