I never make my bed and, arguably, have had sufficient success. I also am prone to clutter and might need to hop scotch around my apartment. I also sometimes cannot find the pair to my shoes. These are things that imperfect women with neurodivergent brains get shamed for. I am okay with being more bothered by human suffering or caring more to solve big problems than bothered by a messy bed.
My morning ritual is grinding dark roast beans with cardamom then making myself an aromatic cup of French press coffee I sip slowly for an hour or three. It is my only consistent routine. It is important self care.
One habit of “accomplishment” I used to do and need to get back to is waking up every morning and doing jumping jacks. I had gotten up to 300 daily with 10 lb weights. It was my no excuses routine that could be done even when traveling. Even if I had a throbbing headache I forced myself to do at least 20-30 to not lose the habit even if that day it was really just a placeholder rather than real exercise. I kept that up, daily, for 2 years (until procedures and surgeries disrupted that routine).
Everyone is different.
Don’t get me wrong, I love to enter neat spaces. Love the beautifully made bed in hotels. I just am terrible at making a bed and I also think the world will survive just fine if I never make my bed my whole life.
Also, living with chronic illness and neurodiversity means I cannot be harsh to myself on “discipline” or “consistency.” Some days I have bad days. On those days I show myself compassion and I rest so as to calm my body’s inflammation or pain. Other days I have seemingly superhuman productivity and get done more than three people would in the same time. Yes, sometimes I power through and work when sick. I try not to overdo that.
This advice below works great for some. There is no one size fits all approach.
