Type Goes Rogue. Experimental typography is where letters break free from the chains of convention and take on a life of their own. It's a free-for-all where creativity is only restricted by the designer. The results are as unpredictable as they are stunning. Traditionalists might clutch their pearls, but for those in the know, it's where the real magic happens. Experimental typography turns the concept of readable text on its head, transforming letters into visual art that's as engaging as it is provocative. Designers play with typefaces like clay, moulding and manipulating them into forms that challenge the viewer's—from subtly altered letter shapes to wildly abstract compositions, experimental type pushes the boundaries of what text can be. The term "experimental typography" may ruffle traditional feathers, sparking debates over its purpose and validity. Yet, it's undeniably about innovation and creativity—venturing beyond the expected But regardless of the semantics, what's clear is that experimental typography is all about pushing past the familiar and into the realm of the unexpected. Take the packaging for non-alcoholic drink brand ''Unbelievable,'' by Marta Veludo Studio—demonstrates how experimental typography can create a brand identity that's both playful and memorable. Their aim was to stand out in the competitive non-alcoholic beverage market—emphasising fun, dreaminess, and memorability. Marta Veludo Studio focused on the letter "u" to craft a distinctive visual identity, creating a can design with sleepy eyes floating above the "u" logo against a dreamy, airbrushed backdrop that captivates. Using a range of typographic techniques, from bubbly 3D renderings to subtly skewed characters, the studio approached the design with creativity, adding distinct personality. The Negroni can evokes warm Mediterranean sunsets, while the Gin Tonic bursts with citrus and pine—each element enhanced by bold typographic choices. Experimental typography allows brands to communicate on a deeper level—it's not just about words, but their presentation. By defying conventions, designers create distinctive, unforgettable experiences that resonate emotionally. For brands like Unbelievable, it's a game-changer, turning simple letters into powerful storytelling tools. Every letter is a chance to surprise, delight, and inspire. And isn't that what great design is all about? Which brand's typography has caught your eye recently? 📷Marta Veludo Studio

Morning Lisa Cain packaging is a crucial touchpoint in 360 experience design. Unbelievable's approach with experimental typography is brilliant! It's a perfect example of how innovative design can elevate a brand's identity and create a memorable consumer experience. This kind of creative risk-taking in packaging design can truly set a brand apart in a crowded market.

Never heard of the brand before, do you know who exactly had the task of creating this brand identity, I’d like to check them out 👍.

I love some good experimental typography, it's so good to see more brands putting their product out there like that 🙌

Most brands don't go for customer typography. I think that hurt their consistency in the brand experience. Like I can feel the fun vibe of this brand through just fonts - that's powerful. Lisa

I think it’s it’s important to note a couple of things: the vertical placement alone is rather rare and experimental typography may be unique to packaging yet not so much print. I wonder if shelving it with the iconic U facing forward will have greater impact as it gives a clearer read. It’s fun and funky and perhaps will draw consumers in out of curiosity. The kerning on Unbelievable does make it hard to read and will probably only become harder at a distance.

I have a huge personal interest in typography design in packaging due to its ability to convey brand messages directly and clearly while maintaining a minimalist and modern aesthetic. However, based on my observations, this design approach seems more prevalent in can packaging rather than carton packaging (mostly happens in plant-based milk, not other milk). I hope you can write more about this for carton packaging as well.

I love the creativity and concept, but designers need to be mindful about accessibility for people with vision issues, dyslexia and colour blindness.
