The 2024 National Strategy for #SuicidePrevention marks a significant step forward in addressing the critical gaps in suicide prevention efforts. By adopting a comprehensive, whole-of-society approach, this strategy recognizes the importance of partnerships and collaboration across various levels of government and sectors. Most importantly, it underscores the invaluable contributions of individuals with lived experience, emphasizing their essential role in shaping effective suicide prevention initiatives. This inclusive approach reflects a commitment to addressing the complex factors contributing to suicide and underscores the need for collective action to save lives and promote mental health and well-being.

Thoughts of suicide or self-harm is the second most common reason for calls to Oklahoma's 988 line, after coordination of care. The New York Times recently highlighted a study of twins that further confirms our understanding of the long-term health effects of childhood trauma on individuals. For example, the study found that "a twin who reported maltreatment was 1.2 times as likely to suffer from a mental illness as the unaffected twin in identical twin pairs, and 1.7 times as likely in fraternal twin pairs." The study's findings also highlight the importance of investment in early prevention and trauma mitigation programs by adding to what Mark Bellis, a professor of public health at Liverpool John Moores University in Britain described as “the increasingly irrefutable evidence that it is going to cost us all a lot less if we invest in tackling” abuse and neglect of children now, rather than “continuing to pay for the epidemic levels of harm” they cause downstream. Facts from the National Alliance on Mental Illness nami.org 2024 tool kit: ◾ Experiencing a mental health crisis: Call, chat or text 988 to speak with a trained crisis counselor 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  ◾ 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, and only half of them receive treatment.  ◾ 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience a serious mental illness each year, and only two-thirds receive treatment.  ◾ 1 in 6 U.S. youth experience a mental health condition each year, and only half of them receive treatment.  ◾ 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24.  ◾ The average delay between onset of mental illness symptoms and treatment is 11 years.  ◾ 122 million people live in Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas.  ◾ In 2020, 1 in 5 young people reported that the pandemic had a significant negative impact on their mental health.  ◾ In 2020, there was a 31% increase in mental health-related emergency department visits among adolescents.  ◾ As of 2021, 1 in 10 young people under age 18 experienced a mental health condition following a COVID-19 diagnosis.  ◾ More than three quarters of Americans (76%) say they are not content with the status of mental health treatment in this country.  ◾ 7 in 10 Americans (72%) agree that people with mental health conditions face discrimination in their everyday life.  ◾ Only half of Americans (53%) say they are familiar with the U.S. mental health care system. https://lnkd.in/gGd4FeXv Stay healthy my friends.
