Check out my new article arguing that we should think about Black History Month in the context of freedom. "Examining African American holidays and festivals reveals that after the American Civil War, Black people celebrated their freedom in diverse ways and called for the freedom of all people internationally. Freedom from enslavement and oppression has been and continues to be a critical theme in African American history, holidays, festivals, and celebrations. In this context, freedom frames Black History Month activities and celebrations." https://lnkd.in/g3mYE-3v #blackhistorymonth #nationalfreedomday #blackhistory #freedom #blackperspectives

A collective. A movement. A liberatory approach to social and emotional learning (SEL), racial justice, and healing. Brainchild of Dr. Dena Simmons.
February is #BlackHistoryMonth, a time to celebrate and contemplate the achievements and legacy of Black people. We believe that Black history lives beyond one month. As we reflect on the words of the late Maya Angelou, we are reminded that we need courage to face history and continue our efforts to transform the future. In the midst of so much suffering in the world, we remember the many people and cultures who have experienced and are experiencing genocide and injustice. May we not repeat history. – How can you be courageous to challenge false narratives and better understand the truths of our history and of today? – What role does courage play in transforming the future? – What is something you can do, even a micro-act, to ensure history is not repeated? #MayaAngelou #LiberatEDSEL

Happy Juneteenth! Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a significant day in American history that marks the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free – two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is not just a celebration of freedom, but a reminder of the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of the Black community. It is a day to reflect on the struggles and achievements of African Americans and recognize the ongoing fight for equality and justice. As we celebrate, let's educate ourselves about the history and significance of Juneteenth, support Black-owned businesses, and continue to advocate for a more inclusive and equitable society. Freedom is a continuous journey; together, we can make a difference.

Representation matters, but it's not enough. It's not enough to have Black politicians. We have to assess whether their agenda links us by adding a familiar song or phrase but whose intentions are steeped in the status quo and the respectability politics that serve the interest of our oppressors. It's not enough to have Black representation on television and movie screens. We have to examine the lens of writers, producers, and directors and the purpose behind images of us they want everyone to see. It's not enough that Black stories are being told everywhere. We have to question the lens, motivation, and the choice of stories being told. Ask what is being left out and reshaped; are the stories authentic to our lived experiences or are they made up for someone else's own benefit, and what do they say about our place in society? It's not enough to have an African-American history curriculum. We must examine who wrote it, who funded it, and the accuracy of what is being taught. Is it the intention to keep us at bay, to be less Black, and/or to give us just enough so that we don't revolt? Representation with a colonized mind is a different form of blackface. -Dr. Consuela Ward #Rootworker #Iyanifa #Educator

Writing about the Black experience fills me with joy. Daily, I advocate for representation in the realm of travel. Each day, I immerse myself in the narratives of individuals catalyzing change within the cultural and travel sectors. Our diversity knows no bounds, our intricacies are boundless, and we defy being confined to any singular classification. I wield my pen so that the world may warmly welcome our distinctions. I scribe because the power of representation cannot be understated. To embody Blackness is to exist in myriad dimensions. I've taken it as my responsibility to narrate our tales and unceasingly remind those who pass judgment that the respect we deserve is non-negotiable. #travel #blacktravel #travelnoire #blacktravelmovement #luxurytravel #travelexpert #travelexperiences #travelwriter
