Can you regulate podcasts without breaching free speech? Canada’s new regulation laws have caused controversy with some calling it “one of the world’s most repressive online censorship schemes” (Glenn Greenwald) while Canada’s regulation teams insist that the new rules “ensure online streaming services make meaningful contributions to Canadian and Indigenous content”. Online censorship of any kind has always sparked an interesting debate within the rights of free speech. Podnews offer the opinion that Canadian radio is the most regulated in the Western world and coincidence or not it is also one of the worst-performing radio markets. Within the parameters of the strict audio market it is hardly surprising that they have taken a similar approach to podcasting, however, without strict guidance on what is and isn't seen as a ‘meaningful contribution’ it is hard to tell if these new rules will actually have any impact on the Canadian podcast output.   We wonder… who is the one to draw the line of a meaningful contribution and if this were to be expanded… what podcasts would we have left?! https://lnkd.in/euNHrgMU #podcasting #thoughtleadership #podcastproduction #podcastexperts #audiocontent

Radio may be king in the car but perhaps not for much longer as it is dying everywhere else. ☹ I had an interesting experience recently where I needed to check the audio quality of an FM transmission. Do you think I could find an FM radio in the house? Nope. My wife had the car so couldn’t check that. I got in touch with seven radio colleagues to ask if they could listen – seven people who all work in the business – and not a single one of them had an FM radio either! So, last weeks research from Edison was no surprise when it showed online audio hitting all time highs for streaming music and podcasts. But that’s at home where internet is king. In-car listening cannot be affected. Or can it? Look at the graph for audio sources in-car. Yes, radio is still king, but look at what is nipping at its toes, online audio and in particular podcasts. Once radio loses its dominance in the car, I think it’s just a matter of time before radio (as we know it) becomes the next dinosaur.
