Join us tomorrow at WASHTO 2024 for a live presentation led by Smita Sharma, Senior Manager of Applications Engineering for Road Zipper. Smita will be sharing a presentation on “Bridging the Gap: Bridge Bike-Ped Path Projects & Safety for All Approach.” Conduits like major bridges and tunnels, where multiple modes of transportation funnel to cross the bridge, are a safety and connectivity concern when protected bike/ped paths are non-existent. Hence, innovation opportunities exist for agencies to manage the bridge right-of-way (ROW) keeping safety for all and community connectivity goals in mind. On the same lines, this presentation intends to tell the story behind the recent addition of protected bike/ped paths in the United States on the Richmond-San Rafael (R-SR) Bridge in California and Discovery Bridge in Missouri. Learn more and register here: https://washto2024.com/ Be sure to stop by and see us at Booth 38B as well - we hope to see you there! Our recent collaboration with Reading Borough Council stemmed from a successful Try-Before-You-Buy Scheme, allowing Reading a first-hand experience of the many benefits found with internal delivery of #LineMarking maintenance & services. ↗️ Following this trial scheme, Reading's Highways Team now use their own Electric Line Marking Machine to deliver line marking projects around the borough. ✅ "We still use our main contractor as they are responsible for our main works, so we are not looking to compete with them. But we are looking to deliver the minor maintenance; AMP marking, the refreshing of double yellow lines and parking enforcement lines. All the bits that could take a while to put on a programme to get a contractor to do, we can react and deal with it straight away." ❓‘Why cables?’❓ Well, the Urban64 system is the only temporary system that doesn’t require any battery exchanges, zero maintenance visits, significantly reducing your schemes carbon footprint. Are environmentally friendly practices just a high-level mission statement, not applicable to your site? Stating the obvious which is frequently overlooked, alternative systems require weekly (or bi-weekly) journeys to site, requiring an operative to move batteries from a vehicle to each signal position, before returning to a depot to charge said batteries. Let’s start to practice what we preach 🪫 ♻️

Great first day at the Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG) Strictly Highways event! It's great to engage once again with the group and also promote our new white paper "Potholes - more than a surface issue". It's so good to know the solutions we bring to this sector can add such value to the LCRIG members. Failing ironwork installations need not be something we just have to 'put up with'... we have the answer to the problem... ✅️ #potholes #sustainability #localauthority

Roundabouts are popping up everywhere and for good reason. Did you know that roundabouts often enhance traffic flow while reducing severe crashes at intersections by an average of 80%*? Unlike traditional intersections, roundabouts reduce traffic speeds, virtually eliminate the most dangerous types of vehicle collisions (head-on, left-turn, and angle), and keep traffic moving smoothly. What's more, long-term operational and maintenance costs are typically minimal, so roundabouts are likely to save your community a penny or two over time! They also help the environment breathe easier. No lengthy waits at stop lights or stop signs = less pollution. Sanderson Stewart is a community design firm with a core purpose “To Plan and Design Enduring Communities.” Over the years, roundabout design projects have helped us achieve our purpose with fewer serious and fatal crashes at intersections, reduced signal and maintenance costs for state and municipal taxpayers, and lowered emissions. We think that's a win! *Source: U.S. Federal Highway Administration #EnduringCommunityDesign #LandPlanning #Infrastructure #RoadDesign #Roundabouts #SafeRoads #SafeSystemsApproach #TransportationEngineering #CivilEngineering

Tech Tip Tuesday: Embracing Roundabouts for Safer Intersections This week on Tech Tip Tuesday, we spotlight a modern approach to intersection design: Roundabouts. Through promoting a continuous flow of traffic, roundabouts have been proven to significantly reduce the frequency and severity of collisions when compared to traditional stop-sign or signal-controlled intersections. In civil and transportation engineering, the adoption of roundabouts is a testament to innovation aimed at enhancing road safety, reducing congestion, and minimizing fuel consumption. The geometric design of roundabouts naturally slows down traffic, ensuring a safer passage for vehicles and pedestrians alike. Environmental engineering also finds a friend in roundabouts. By reducing idling times and promoting a smoother flow of traffic, roundabouts contribute to lower vehicle emissions, making them an eco-friendly choice for modern urban planning. Check out the following additional resources to delve deeper into the benefits and applications of roundabouts: Federal Highway Administration - Roundabouts: An Informational Guide https://lnkd.in/e_TX-4_9 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety / Highway Loss Data Institute - The Benefits of Modern Roundabouts https://lnkd.in/egnVbFq2 Georgia Department of Transportation – Safety Evaluation of Roundabouts in Georgia https://lnkd.in/eswjmaFU Tune in next week for another valuable tip from our civil, environmental, and transportation engineering professionals at GWES. Together, let's build a sustainable future! #TechTipTuesday #CivilEngineering #SustainableUrbanDevelopment #Roundabouts

The U.S. transportation system kills over 40,000 people a year in crashes — and injures hundreds of thousands more. As engineers, landscape architects, and planners, we have an ethical obligation to develop solutions that improve the safety, health, and welfare of the public so that fewer of our roadways are dangerous by design. Implementing Vision Zero and the Safe System Approach has proven successful in countries across the globe and some cities here. However, it won't fully succeed if we continue to make the same choices that prioritize vehicles over people on foot, on bike, and accessing transit. If you haven't already, check out our Director of Strategy Andy Clarke's recent article to learn three ways in which we can all do better to truly create safer streets and roads for all: https://lnkd.in/eKwpSnCQ #EthicsAwarenessMonth #SS4A
