Our recent collaboration with Reading Borough Council stemmed from a successful Try-Before-You-Buy Scheme, allowing Reading a first-hand experience of the many benefits found with internal delivery of #LineMarking maintenance & services. ↗️ Following this trial scheme, Reading's Highways Team now use their own Electric Line Marking Machine to deliver line marking projects around the borough. ✅ "We still use our main contractor as they are responsible for our main works, so we are not looking to compete with them. But we are looking to deliver the minor maintenance; AMP marking, the refreshing of double yellow lines and parking enforcement lines. All the bits that could take a while to put on a programme to get a contractor to do, we can react and deal with it straight away." ❓‘Why cables?’❓ Well, the Urban64 system is the only temporary system that doesn’t require any battery exchanges, zero maintenance visits, significantly reducing your schemes carbon footprint. Are environmentally friendly practices just a high-level mission statement, not applicable to your site? Stating the obvious which is frequently overlooked, alternative systems require weekly (or bi-weekly) journeys to site, requiring an operative to move batteries from a vehicle to each signal position, before returning to a depot to charge said batteries. Roundabouts are popping up everywhere and for good reason. Did you know that roundabouts often enhance traffic flow while reducing severe crashes at intersections by an average of 80%*? Unlike traditional intersections, roundabouts reduce traffic speeds, virtually eliminate the most dangerous types of vehicle collisions (head-on, left-turn, and angle), and keep traffic moving smoothly. What's more, long-term operational and maintenance costs are typically minimal, so roundabouts are likely to save your community a penny or two over time! They also help the environment breathe easier. No lengthy waits at stop lights or stop signs = less pollution. The U.S. transportation system kills over 40,000 people a year in crashes — and injures hundreds of thousands more. As engineers, landscape architects, and planners, we have an ethical obligation to develop solutions that improve the safety, health, and welfare of the public so that fewer of our roadways are dangerous by design. Implementing Vision Zero and the Safe System Approach has proven successful in countries across the globe and some cities here. However, it won't fully succeed if we continue to make the same choices that prioritize vehicles over people on foot, on bike, and accessing transit.
