On top of that, the Zoo Officer educated all tenants on the different mammals. 🌿 Building 2 - 101 Miller Street They celebrated World Organic Week by giving away bamboo-tote bags which were filled with organic goodies. These events are great examples of how you can engage your tenants and prove your commitment to sustainability. 10 Year Development Plan Announced For Offaly Lake And Trail

IS BEING DIRECTOR OF A ZOO ONE OF THE MOST STRESSFUL JOBS THERE IS...? I was struck to see yet another CEO of a charity zoo in the UK just the other day hand in their resignation (Claudia Roberts at ZSEA). And there does seem to have been ( - all kinds of entirely different contexts, let us be clear) quite a flurry of standing downs recently. Indeed only a few years back I was on first name terms with most of the UK zoo leadership figures. Now – after Covid and lots of other stuff – I only know a handful. I know nothing at all of the circumstances of the rights and wrongs at ZSEA, as my contact there in recent times has been minimal. I did though have the privilege of working with Martin Goymour ten years ago in the transition from his two private zoos to a new charity; and indeed proposed the name ‘The Zoological Society of East Anglia’ for the new non-profit. So politics and zoos..? Now there is an interesting subject! Well, when I was at my alma mater Chester, I recall one very sophisticated figure I brought in as a trustee from the business world remarking to me that, compared to all the hurly burly and sheer nastiness he had seen in the corporate sector, there was strikingly little at Chester Zoo. That I should stress is 30 years ago, and of course where you get human primates you inevitably get politics. So I am pretty sure a lot of the people reading this will have their ‘stories’. I have also had considerable involvement at one point in my career with championing the overall zoo community to the political cadre (at both Westminster and Brussels). Not sure I ever wholly succeeded in getting the fundamental wide offer of our zoo community over to our national decision makers or persuading all zoo colleagues that that was the right thing to do; but it was certainly another interesting ‘rodeo’. In ‘The Zoo’, all of the above tensions and pressures involved are thrown into relief but only through metaphor and mythology. One of the pivotal characters as Zoo Director has a pretty rough time through it all and faces a bleak destiny. Whilst absolutely NOT related to any of the CEOs I have worked with, this does reflect my appreciation of the stresses such figures come under and the very serious responsibilities they need to discharge. Any reading this and working in or connected to a given zoo or similar organisation will have their own strong and valid feelings as to the various leaderships they have served under. The team at @selatiresearch has been hard at work potting over 200 marula saplings this week, with more on the way! 🌳 Marulas are a favourite for wildlife, including elephants, whose eating habits can pose challenges. Tuesday Opportunity Share: Sitka Ecosystem Grants "SCIENCE AND STEWARDSHIP TO FUEL NATURAL SYSTEMS Humans are an integral part of the ecosystem and the decisions we make have upstream and downstream effects." While I have only dipped my toes into the hunting world (finally got my license last year, and am learning the two falls about animal migration patterns), I do know this: we are intrinsically connected to the natural world around us in everything we do--and that fact is made all the more evident when we harvest our own food. Grants ranging from$3,000 - 20,000 support are project- and medium-agnostic, and support individuals as much as organizations. These grants "fund projects that improve the state and function of an ecosystem, allow for the growth of the hunting experience through access and education, and create opportunities for collaborative conservation."
