For some time now, I've had the honor of being part of the Time is Brain startup team. It's a pleasure to collaborate with Doctors Alicia Martínez, Jaume Coll-Cantí, Antoni Dávalos, and the rest of the team on the journey of creating #BraiN20 to improve outcomes for those who suffer from a stroke. As you probably know, Stroke is the leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of mortality worldwide, so you can imagine our eagerness to bring our solution to market and help as many people as possible in the face of this devastating illness. During this time, I've had the opportunity to immerse myself in the health and startup environment, gaining firsthand knowledge of the sector and its nuances. I am grateful to know that Time is Brain is not alone on this journey; there's an entire ecosystem that supports and aids in ensuring our goal reaches fruition. One of these fellow travelers, our friends at Diario Médico & Correo Farmacéutico, recently invited us to the #EnnovaHealthDay, where Gisela Ruiz and I had the pleasure of participating. We discussed innovation, our journey, and our experiences in an unparalleled setting. I'm sharing a video where I point out what I think is key in the startup journey: "Believing." https://lnkd.in/dApbRdXe Please check this link to view an extended video of the gala: https://lnkd.in/dRrb6jKd #EnnovaHealthDay, #startups, #spinoff, #medtech, #innovation, #neurosciences, #medicaldevices, #interventionalradiology, #neuroradiology, #ai, #timeisbrain, #brain20, #strokeismypriority, #greaterthanstroke

💊 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿? Here are some highlights from a session at our Summit: 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲? 💡 A “normal” aging process might not be the best aging process ✔ Preventative medicine is focused on early disease diagnosis and treatment, but overlooks the need to optimise the body’s homeostasis and biological processes to reduce susceptibility to age-related diseases. ✔ The pace of aging and the specific organ systems affected varies among individuals - understanding this is crucial in identifying the right targets and drugs to counteract the aging process. 💡 Technology-assisted longevity ✔ Devices can help monitor the body’s biological age, providing insights into our physiology and potential interventions. ✔ Aging research has seen an increase in the integration of AI technologies and data-driven approaches. 💡 Longevity medicine is gradually being integrated into healthcare systems ✔ The challenge now is to individualise these approaches. 💡 Invest earlier in the body to reduce the gap between healthspan and lifespan ✔ The goal is to improve (and extend) the quality of life, staying free from age-related diseases. A big thank you to our panelists Prof. Andrea B. Maier and Dr. Frank Pun, and Dr. Natasha Hui Jin Ng for moderating such an important conversation. I learned so much at this week's Femtech Innovations in Hormone Health event in San Francisco! The event brought together founders, investors and enthusiasts to discuss emerging trends in hormone health and Femtech as a whole. Main Takeaways: ⚡Lack of Attention - Hormone health receives limited attention in most medical school curriculums, which results in a lot of unknowns surrounding the impacts of hormones on women’s health. One of the best ways for patients to advocate for themselves is to ask questions. Next time you're at the doctor, ask them your hormone-related questions, and highlight your personal experience. Even if they can't answer today, patient self-advocacy is vital for driving further education to this area. 💡Solutioning - A large area of focus in the Femtech space is on using diagnostic tools and the data they produce to inform lifestyle changes and treatments. While consumers are eager to track more of their personal data than ever before, data abundance can present challenges in translating findings into practical applications. It is important to be clear on whose lives will be made easier by this data (doctor, patient, etc.), and find clear ways to communicate trends to stakeholders so they can leverage them to take action. 💰Investment - Femtech companies currently receive only 3% of all digital health investment, despite Femtech problems impacting about half of the population. Trends also indicate that Femtech startups receive greater traction with investors at the early stages, but face challenges raising later rounds. Founders can combat this by positioning their companies as broader "healthcare companies" at later stages of raising capital where they tend to garner less attention. Thank you to panelists Sylvia Kang, Jessica Karr, Kendell Cannon, MD, and Julia Layton, and moderator Rachel Lehmann Haupt for your time and insights! #femtech #healthtechinnovation #womenshealth

Just a few reflections from the recent health.tech conference in Munich: 👩⚕️ People: The bridge between #doctors and #tech innovators is crucial. It's inspiring to meet so many medical professionals who are breaking new ground with their innovative models Dr. Sven Jungmann, Dr. med. Alexandra Widmer, Christian Schlatzer, Philippa I. Lantwin and Dr. Johannes Wimmer, among others. It's clear that the alignment of incentives in the intersection of building a medically AND technologically great innovation is crucial, if we want to build a modern healthcare system in DE. 🧪Science: The focus on #EvidenceBasedMedicine is refreshing and much needed. The initial wave of digital healthcare brought many lifestyle and “business only” players to the market. Now is the time to learn from those experiences, and bring actual medical expertise into patient care. Startups that focus on generating medical evidence are on the right track. A shout-out to Prof. Dr. Pia Wülfing (PINK! Breast Cancer DiGa) and Dr. Thomas Lenzen (fimo Chronic Care App) for the valuable exchange on this. 🚀Entrepreneurship: Business models in healthcare like #DiGa and #Selektivvertrag still remain quite a challenge for young startups. From navigating regulations to securing funding, implementation in the German market can be tricky. But challenge breeds innovation, and it's clear that we need to simplify the process to bringing innovative digital medicine to our patients. Many potential founders do not even start because of this. 🌸Femtech: It's exciting to see the recent rise of innovation in #femtech. Innovators are addressing the oft-overlooked aspects of care, such as hormonal health, PMS, PCOS, fertility, and particularly menopause! There's still a lot of work to be done, but the momentum is extremely promising. Thanks to Dr. Vivien Karl, Dr. med. Lisa-Maria Wallwiener, and Anna-Lena Sahler for the exchange! Lastly, I'd like to thank my team for making the time truly enjoyable Celine Röder & Lisa Lehner!

🤒 Why do we get sick? That's what most medical studies strive to answer. But, how about also understanding how to stay healthy? Our lifestyle is largely what defines our health. Did you know it can be observed in the expression of our genes, that is, in the RNA? Yes, contrary to common belief, the genes we inherited from our parents (DNA) do not define our state of health. 🧪 Our supported startup Beyond You (Formerly Exheus), founded by pioneering health researchers, is on a mission to understand not only why we get sick, but also why we are healthy and how we can continue to live in good shape. It has developed a unique blood test that allows for personalized care by revealing which genes are active in our bodies through measuring +17,000 mRNA blood biomarkers related to inflammatory status, metabolic health, longevity, and the state of organ systems, among others. 🌟Discover more: https://beyondyou.life/ 👏#WA4STEAM #businessangels are proud to support Beyond You (Formerly Exheus)'s team led by Teresa Tarragó, Alexandre Perera LLuna, Pol Cervera and Jose Manuel Soria in their endeavor to help people live better and longer. #WA4STEAM is an all-women #businessangels association investing in #womenfounders in #steam. 👉🏻Visit www.wa4steam.com for information about the sectors our angels support, if our angels and your startup are a good match, and details on who we are. #womensupportingwomen #democratisingbusinessangels #womenentrepreneurs #womenfounders #womenbusinessangels #wa4steam #womeninvestors #stem #STEAMfemenino Genoveva Ortiz, Susana Marcos, Ines Boronat, Sara Santolaria, Begoña García Almería, Rocío García Rubio, Flavia Bartolome Tocino, VISITACION DIAZ VARONA, Ana Lozano Portillo, Beni Cantos, Adela Martín Ruiz, Regina Llopis, Maria Maso, Ana García Rodríguez, Teresa Morales Muñoz, Carolina Rubio Miner, Julia Sánchez, Andrea Martinelli, Dolores Sarrion, LEONOR ARESTI, Mª José Rivero Menéndez, Nuria (纽瑞雅) Capdevila, Lourdes Nuñez-Müller, PhD, MBA, Maria Jose Manjon Rodriguez, Idoia Picossi, Ana Suárez Gamazo, Carmen Barcelo, Jessica Bolanos, Raquel Sánchez Aparicio, Lucrecia Palacios, Peña Lería, Carolina Pinart, Ph.D., Henar Martínez Torres

Sector to watch: Healthcare/Women's health, 2023 Recently we decided to dig into the Healthcare/Women's health sector to create a structured overview of its subsectors and global investment activity. Thanks to the SVB research team (for the data), Octopus Ventures (for a good take on recent investment topics), and also a number of our friends from the VC industry (for review and comments), we've compiled the below 1-page sector summary. Here's what we learned: ✅ Main investment activity (both funding and exit) takes place in the US, Europe, and the UK, with the US providing for >80% of all three. ✅ 4 main subsectors are Biopharma, HealthTech, Diagnostics/Tools and Devices. Women's health spans across these four subsectors and nearly 20% of its 2.5y funding flow went into the Fertility vertical. ✅ Examples of investment topics under focus are personalized treatment/care, menopause/sperm quality, hospital operations efficiency, genomic health, psychedelic medication, non-invasive devices, and dementia therapies. ✅ Some VC funds to watch in the sector include ARCH Venture Partners, Octopus Ventures, Northpond Ventures, New Enterprise Associates (NEA), and Portfolia. ✅ Some VC-backed Healthcare companies to watch include Asimov, Monogram Health, Rapport Therapeutics, and Proov. Check out the 1-pager, and feel free to share and comment! #vc #healthcare #sectortowatch #data
