Today marks 14 years since I quit drinking. The funny thing about this anniversary now, is that so many people in my life have only known me as that Irish guy who doesn’t drink. My wife has never known me to drink, and my son never will. Yet it will remain the most consequential decision of mine that led me to a life with them. I’ve noticed a growing trend of people making the decision to change their relationship with alcohol. It’s never an easy decision but I’m delighted to see the stigma lessening because that’s often the most challenging hurdle, especially with how much happy hours and events anchor around alcohol in our industry. If you’re hearing that inner voice telling you that you need a change - listen to it. If only as an experiment. Speaking personally, the very best things may well be on the other side of that decision, and there’s never been more acceptance of making it as there is today. Also, the non-alcoholic beer selection these days it top tier.

One of the best things I've ever done and why I'm thrilled to be a newly designsted brand ambassador for Athletic Brewing Co. I think there's an opportunity in the B2B space when it comes to networking events and professional conferences where you can create an environment that focuses on real connection versus the mask of alcohol. Really happy to see you post this, I just crossed 2 years of not drinking and am not looking back.

Good for you!!! One of the biggest impacts to my health and wellbeing was giving up drinking. Huge factor in my 130+lbs weight loss journey and after 3.5 years I honestly just don't miss it.

Great job Liam! I gave up drinking in January and it has been the best decision for me thus far. Here’s hoping I get to write a post on it in 13.5yrs time! 🤝

I’ve never drank alcohol, and it is a decision I’ve never regretted. There is too much downside risk, and I can enjoy myself without it. It has been interesting to see the changing culture around alcohol. Anyway, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to say on such occasions, but let’s go with “Happy anniversary!”

I see alcohol as a young person’s crutch. Li quid confidence, as they say, but when you get a bit older, you just don’t need a crutch anymore (or shouldn’t). You’d benefit much more from having a sharp mind at all times, and seeing how that crutch can be leveraged. It’s hard to put a puzzle together when your mind is cloudy.

The person is the most importaht thing. Not the style or the “substance” we ingest, not our jobs nor our ambitions. It’s the people around us. It’s you and it’s me. I love good wine, in particular, but the “stigma” has never seemed anything but stupid, more an indictment of the people who do than those who don’t. Congratulations on your anniversary!

Congrats on the milestone! I drink in moderation but I agree that non-alcoholic beers have come a long way. I like to drink them on days I want a beer but don’t want any adverse affects. Athletic Brewing is good stuff, it tastes 90% like a real beer. That is good enough for me and far better than non-alcoholic beers were even five years ago. Glad to see less stigma on not drinking as well.

I’m as dry as the Sahara, Liam — and proudly so! I originally chose it for performance reasons in weightlifting, but adopted it as a lifestyle choice for general health and wellness. I sense the stigmas beginning to shift as well, but they are sticky. Congrats on the years of living YOUR life outside the dogma of others.
