On July 16, 2024 I received a dispatch request for my Type 1 water tender for the Falls Fire, about 13 miles north of Burns, OR. At that time it was around 60,000 acres. Due to continued 100+ degree temperatures, high winds and a lightning cell that moved through, the fire is 139,507 acres as of this post and still growing. My driver is one of 1,621 personnel on this fire. Currently each load of water is a 2-hour round trip due to the terrain, the roads are terrible with large sharp rocks that are brutal on expensive truck tires. Four brand new drive tires going on tomorrow afternoon. My driver will time out next week and I'll be out there for a couple days and hopefully get some pictures. Sadly, so far they have lost 29 structures and the current suppression cost is 28.3 million dollars and increasing every day. Currently Region 6, OR/WA has 48 uncontained large fires with 13 new fires reported in the last 24 hours burning just shy of 1 million acres. Please do your part, please be mindful of your outside activities, working or recreating and do not do anything that could start a new fire. Please follow the fire restrictions in place, they are there to protect our forests. 7/26/24 Update. There are now 59 uncontained large fires in Region 6 with 21 new fires in the last 24 hours. The Falls fire is now 140,422 acres with 55% containment. Tragically we lost a firefighter last night on this fire. A SEAT (Single Engine Air Tanker) was working a new lightning start near Seneca when it went missing around 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. The pilot and plane were found this morning. Please keep all firefighters in your thoughts, it's a very dangerous job and this tragic loss underscores just how dangerous it can be.
