The Housing Studio team recently ventured out of the office to explore New Urbanism in Pittsburgh. This design movement focuses on creating environmentally friendly, walkable neighborhoods and tackling issues from post-WWII urban sprawl. Visiting developments like the Summerset at Frick Park and Heritage Highlands to see how these principles—like pedestrian-friendly design, accessible public transit, green spaces, and local architecture—can shape both market-rate and affordable housing. "Eyes on the Street" is a concept coined by urbanist Jane Jacobs in her influential book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities." It refers to the idea that active and engaged street life, with people walking, sitting, and observing their surroundings, contributes to community safety and urban vitality. Eyes on the Street refers to individuals, such as residents, business owners, and pedestrians, who naturally observe and supervise public spaces. This constant presence of people creates a sense of safety and discourages crime. The concept emphasizes the importance of designing neighbourhoods and streets to encourage pedestrian activity and social interaction. Some public realm design features that help promote Eyes on the Street include wide sidewalks, storefronts facing the street, and well-lit areas. 🏗️ Showcasing Innovation in Urban Development within the Bowen Hills PDA In the heart of Bowen Hills Priority Development Area, Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) is spearheading transformative efforts to redefine urban space. Our Development Assessment team is leading the charge, driving forward new housing typologies that exemplify the future of inner-city living in Brisbane. Brewers Terraces, a JGL Properties Pty Ltd concept, architecturally crafted by Blight Rayner Architecture, stands as a beacon of innovation. This groundbreaking project is a market-leading example of high-quality “gentle density” development with six freehold terrace homes that are a contemporary nod to the iconic terraces of Sydney and Melbourne, a first for Brisbane. The terraces offer efficient land use at a human scale, blending private residences with adaptable commercial spaces - all equipped with EV charging facilities. "The approval of the Brewers Terraces project is a testament to the collaborative synergy between EDQ and housing providers," remarked Ben Lyons, Director at Urbis. "EDQ's adaptable policy framework and outcomes-driven approach during the development assessment phase were pivotal in bringing this visionary project to fruition." This partnership underscores EDQ's unparalleled ability to expedite priority developments while delivering meticulously crafted environments that cater to the evolving needs of urban dwellers. This week’s Salon on Affordable Housing was really a terrific discussion about different strategies for design of affordable housing. Wonderful to share info and see the work of my esteemed colleagues. A lot of the discussion centered around how to drive down costs and innovate. And how to design in such a way that communities can accept affordable housing in their midst. My take was that affordable housing needs to happen at scale, and we need density at transit and high ground. A healthy city has a mix of incomes and uses around transit. Great walkable neighborhoods should be accessible to all. We have a defecit of 135K affordable housing units in Miami Dade county. In previous generations, designers and developers were able to design and integrate housing with dignity for all incomes. I have lived in garden apartments in Miami Beach and other places in Miami and they were designed beautifully with access to green areas and plenty of natural light. There is a pressing need for all of us designers to do better for more people and to advocate for healthier, sustainable and more equitable communities. In this, I believe the Eames motto is correct. We should strive “to make the best for the most for the least”. #designmatters #AffordableHousing #SustainableCities #EquitableDesign #ArchitectureForAll #HousingCrisis #InnovativeDesign #CommunityDesign #TransitOrientedDevelopment #SustainableLiving #DesignForChange #HousingForAll #GreenArchitecture #DesignEquity #ResilientCities #ArchitectsForChange #DesignWithPurpose #InclusiveDesign #MiamiDadeHousing #WalkableNeighborhoods #DesignForGood

Here are 5 key traits we're using to revitalise high streets and town centres for a sustainable future.
🏬 Our town centres are in urgent need of revitalisation. As they have shifted, and changed, it feels as though we are going full circle with many high streets currently finding themselves in a state of decline. Town centres can no longer rely on a retail-centric approach to survive, but that doesn’t mean they need a complete reinvention. Working with Bruntwood Works and Trafford Council, we are learning from the past to revitalise Stretford Mall, reimagining the town centre as the buzzing heart of a lively community. A place for people. What does that future high street look like? Here are five key traits. ⬇ Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e7zgKPZd #towncentre #highstreet #architecture #urbandesign #mixeduse #planning #community #manchester #stretfordmall

At the core of urban development lies the fundamental principle of inclusivity—a philosophy that transcends age, background, and ability. In this spirit, City of Dreams in Panipat embodies a user-centric design approach aimed at enriching the lives of its diverse residents. From toddlers to seniors, every individual's needs and preferences are carefully considered in the planning of green spaces, parks, and recreational areas. By strategically distributing play areas for children, exercise zones for adults, and social spaces for seniors throughout the township, City of Dreams cultivates an environment that promotes active living and fosters a deep sense of community and belonging. **Unrolling the Blueprint: Adapting to Change - Vancouver's Multiplex Movement 🏘️** Welcome back to "Unrolling the Blueprint," where we explore the evolving dynamics of architecture and urban design. Today, we turn our focus to a significant shift in Vancouver's housing landscape: the introduction of six-unit multiplexes in residential areas, as recently highlighted in the Vancouver Sun. This development is not just about altering housing structures; it's about rethinking urban living in response to changing times. Vancouver's consideration of integrating six-unit multiplexes into traditionally single-family zones is a vivid example of how cities evolve with societal needs. It's a direct response to the growing demands for housing in a city where space is at a premium. In the architectural world, we often confront the challenge of balancing progress with preservation. The idea of multiplexes in Vancouver's neighborhoods is a striking illustration of this balance. It's about infusing new life into established areas while respecting their historical essence. These multiplexes are envisaged to harmonize with the existing streetscapes, not overshadow them. This move is a bold statement in urban adaptability. It reflects a city that is not afraid to embrace change to meet the contemporary demands of its residents. By opening up traditionally single-family areas to more diverse housing options, we're not just creating space for more people; we're crafting opportunities for richer community interactions and varied lifestyles. Moreover, this initiative speaks to a broader theme in architecture and urban planning: the need for dynamic solutions in static environments. Cities like Vancouver are living entities, and as such, they require adaptable strategies that respond to the ever-evolving needs of their inhabitants. In essence, the potential introduction of multiplexes in Vancouver underscores a fundamental architectural truth: our built environments must evolve with us. They should reflect our current realities, anticipate future needs, and honor the legacy of the past. As we continue to unroll the blueprint of our urban landscapes, let's embrace these changes as opportunities for growth, innovation, and enhanced communal living. Stay with us as we further explore the facets of urban transformation and its impact on our daily lives. https://lnkd.in/g7Uw2UZB #UnrollingTheBlueprint #VancouverUrbanShift #ArchitecturalEvolution #CityAdaptation #DynamicUrbanism
