Engaging with aspiring graduate students in architecture and planning, especially those considering studying abroad, makes me genuinely happy. It's heartening to see their awareness of critical global issues of today in architecture and planning world, and their genuine desire to create positive change. One of the most frequent questions I receive during our discussions is: "How much professional experience is required before pursuing a master's degree?" While there's no one-size-fits-all answer, here are some considerations to help you make an informed decision: 1️⃣ Assess Your Goals Reflect on your career aspirations and the role a master's degree will play in achieving them. Are you looking to specialize in a particular area? Advance your career? Transition to a new role or industry? 2️⃣ Industry Standards Research the admission criteria of your preferred programs. Some may value professional experience, while others prioritize academic achievements or the strength of your portfolio. 3️⃣ Networking and Mentorship Connect with professionals in your field to gain insights into the value of professional experience versus advanced education. Mentorship can provide invaluable guidance tailored to your individual circumstances. 4️⃣ Internship Opportunities Explore internship or co-op opportunities during your undergraduate studies to gain practical experience and clarify your career interests. These experiences can also enhance your graduate school applications. 5️⃣ Personal Readiness Ensure you have a solid understanding of the architectural and/or planning issues shaping our urban environments. This will help you feel personally ready for the advanced coursework of graduate studies. Ultimately, the decision to pursue a master's degree in architecture or planning should align with your career goals, interests, and personal circumstances. While there's no definitive rule for the amount of professional experience required, relevant experience undoubtedly enriches your graduate school journey by offering real-world insights! It’s her last day, so we wanted to take a moment to shine a spotlight on one of our interns, Anna Larson!   About to go into her sophomore year, Anna is currently working toward a civil engineering degree at the University of Iowa, and we asked her a few questions about her internship experience over the last three months. These were her answers 😊   What have you learned this summer? This summer, I learned about what a career in civil engineering might look like, and how the math and science classes I have at Iowa apply to real projects. I have also learned how to use CAD software, as I had never worked with it before.   What has been your favorite experience during your internship? My favorite experience has been working on a large project and seeing it grow from its beginning stages. I've learned the most about engineering here from the ways conflicts in the project are found and then solved, and since more problems occur in larger projects, at the end there's a larger sense of accomplishment.   What are your hobbies & interests outside of school and work? At Iowa, I am part of the pep band and the University Lecture Committee, and I will be studying abroad next semester in Valencia, Spain. Celebrating Mónica Martínez, Valeria Reza, and José Luis López for joining the Cobeal, S.A. de C.V. Professional Internship Program, registered and accredited by UNAM’s Department of Architecture. The Cobeal Internship Program PPS-023-2 is an accredited program offered to graduate-level architecture students as an opportunity to complete their professional service requirement in Cobeal’s dynamic onsite construction environment. Professional Service is a student graduation requirement. In addition to architectural training, this program offers students the opportunity to contribute to the construction documentation for the National School of Civil Protection (ENAPROC) project. This program represents a significant step forward in fostering collaboration between the academic and professional world, while furthering ongoing bilateral relations being cultivated by the United States and Mexico.
