I attended 3 different types of motorsport events this year. Indy 500, Canadian GP and CTMP IMSA. (MotoGP next year) With Pierre Gasly’s recent comments about fan intrusion. It got me thinking all these events have had a wide variety of fan engagement. The bottom line is, it’s a workspace for the drivers. For fans, it’s the closest they will get to the action. What fans want in 2014 is not the same as 2023. That doesn’t mean you should invade people’s personal space. The biggest difference between all these three is the level of access you’re getting. Did it make the experience better? It did. The bottom line is, that expectations from fans have changed, whether it is physically or digitally. My strategy to understand expectations: 👉 Having 1v1 conversations 👉 Direct connection to fans 👉 Attending watch events 👉 Provide value on social The plan for next year is to try and attend more races/events next year. In honor of the start of the F1 season, I would like to share with you all my setup for watching F1 races - College Edition! I use F1 Multiviewer to be able to watch multiple perspectives at once, and I think it's really cool to be able to keep track of my favorite drivers at the same time as the regular broadcast of the race. I run F1 multiviewer on my laptop, and I hook it up to my TV to display the main broadcast nice and big. I use my laptop screen itself to show my two favorite drivers' cameras, and I also have an advanced live timings screen displayed as well. The timings show the current speed and gear, DRS activation, fastest lap, previous lap, interval and lead gaps, sector times, mini-sector colors, and current tire and tire life. The final touches of this setup are my speaker that I have the driver audios outputting to (to physically separate it from my TV and laptop audio), and the small race control display, notifying me of penalties, track limits, hazards, etc. It's no secret I'm a HUUUUUGE F1 nerd, more than just how I love watching the races, so I figured it would be cool to show the extent to which I tune into the races, even while having a cramped setup in college! Really amazing article about F1 Academy and growth the series has seen in a short amount of time. The Academy aims to give a platform to underrepresented drivers in motorsport, specifically women. In this article, Susie Wolff, the series CEO, talks about recent partnerships between the Academy drivers and the 10 Formula 1 teams. Each team, along with other partners like Charlotte Tilbury Beauty, will back one of the 15 Academy drivers for their season. In the US, we have seen a surge of support for women's sport recently. But one quote from Wolff stood out to me: "This is not running on goodwill because it's hip to support women's sport. We need to build a model that is sustainable in the long term." As much as we should and need to support the growth of women's sport, it should not be for short-term satisfaction, rather for sustainability and long-term success that mirrors its male-dominated counterparts. It's amazing to hear F1 Academy is taking this approach, and hopefully other leagues and leaders follow suit with the same mindset. Next month, for Janelle Wells, Ph.D.'s Global Sport and Entertainment course, USF VSEM will have the pleasure to present to F1 Academy when we travel to London! I am beyond excited to listen and learn from them, and bring back ideas to spread to US sport fans.
