We pick up three key themes from McKinsey's State of Fashion 2024 report, analysing AI’s pervasive influence in the industry; the climate emergency and fashion’s future with sustainability; and how brands, retailers and suppliers can prepare for fashion’s economic outlook for the year ahead 👀. interli.net/3N4z2pp#fashiontechnology#fashionbusiness#AI#sustainability
Is the fusion of technology with fashion the gateway to a more inclusive and sustainable industry? 🌿👚🔌
Laws of Motion, a venture by Carly Bigi, showcases the remarkable potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in pioneering inclusivity and sustainability in fashion.
Utilizing AI, the brand introduced a revolutionary body scanning technology enabling the creation of perfectly fitting garments with zero waste, heralding a new era of personalized and sustainable fashion.
Launched in 2019, Laws of Motion swiftly escalated its operations, generating a revenue of $40 million within a short span, post a modest pre-seed fund of $2 million.
The brand's AI-driven approach not only facilitates precise sizing but also significantly minimizes waste, reflecting a compelling success narrative of sustainable and inclusive fashion through technology💡🌿.
By introducing fresh perspectives and practices in one of the most prolific yet wasteful industries, they are setting a precedent for others to follow, integrating sustainability and inclusivity through innovative approaches🔄🌐
The fusion of technology and fashion is evidently broadening horizons for sustainability and inclusivity. What are your thoughts on this evolution? Engage in the conversation below! 💬

🌿 AI can help us move towards a more sustainable fashion industry.
You probably already know that the fast fashion industry is one of the most detrimental industries to our planet.
But most of us are probably still a little guilty of buying new clothes from a fast fashion company (even if it is just now and then)
It is hard to go for the greener option, which is often more expensive and less convenient.
As IDEO - a leading design and innovation company - has put it:
“To achieve scale, we need people to adopt green products because they are better, easier, and more exciting, not because they are green.”
I agree, and think there are new exciting opportunities to achieve this greener future.
AI could be the solution to a more sustainable industry where supply and demand are much more aligned.
Would love to see any use cases of AI leading to active planet positive changes, both within the fashion industry, and outside of it!

Underwhelming is an understatement. There is so much innovation happening in fashion thanks to emerging technology in AI, Web3 enhancements, blockchain, AR, and more.
This round-up by Vogue Australia of "tech" used in last week's Australian Fashion week completely missed the mark and the opportunity to open a more exciting conversation and usher in the big dreamers and doers advancing the fashion industry.
It's 2024, is it really newsworthy to call out "a digital landscape playing on the large screen behind."
And, there was this call out "The computer-aided design (CAD) works that make up the collection are ‘digitally recycled’... "one that will live on forever digitally." (There's no mention of blockchain so I'm assuming it's not on chain.)
Hmmm, I guess my confirmation code for a flight to Sydney on Qantas will live on forever digitally also? For that matter every shopping list I've saved on Notes in my iphone?
This is not to undermine the designers. I applaud every one of them for their work, vision and creativity however they choose to express it. Their work is not the issue. The issue is the hugely overlooked opportunity for a leading publication like VOGUE to open minds when it comes to the intersection of creativity and culture because of the role technology can have in fashion.
So what would being "Future forward" really look like?
Technology can democratize access to fashion for emerging designers. No longer bound to spend money on samples and expensive fabrics to sample, designers can test concepts digitally first: i.e. create once and reduce waste in materials, expense and time.
Technology can unlock new design silhouettes: the future of fashion shouldn't mean we all look like we are lifelike avatars from gaming. Sure, if you want that great, it exists, but the use of AI design can reinvent how garments are constructed and with what new materials.
And most importantly, technology can widen the circle and bring others in. Co-creation, community involvement, co-ownership, self expression in physical and digital forms can enhance the value of a garment as consumers gain multi-dimensional and multi-modal benefits from a single transaction.
Vogue Australia I love you but this totally missed the mark and the opportunity to highlight a forward thinking point of view on fashion, a $92Bn USD global industry constantly looking for fresh perspectives and ideas.
First of all Kestrel Jenkins, thank you for having me.
Secondly, I absolutely agree that the narrative around technology as the saviour of sustainable fashion is not only overly simplistic but also somewhat misplaced.
Yes, technology, is a powerful tool, but it is truly just one piece of the intricate puzzle we're all trying to solve in the fashion industry.
What resonated with me most from our discussions is the necessity for a holistic approach. Yes, innovation is crucial, but so is introspection into the practices that have sustained cultures for centuries. The wisdom in Indigenous methodologies, for instance, offers invaluable insights, often overlooked in the race for the 'next big thing' in tech.
Moreover, the ethical implications of technology, especially in fashion, demand rigorous scrutiny. The recent issues around AI, whether it's the unauthorized replication of art or the superficial simulation of diversity, underscore a deeper malaise in our value system. It's not about what technology can do for us; it's about how we choose to use technology and for whose benefit.
As we delve into the complex realms of fashion, from tech to policy, and beyond, our conversation reaffirms my belief in the multifaceted nature of sustainable solutions. The path forward involves an amalgamation of advocacy, cultural respect, ethical tech adoption, and above all, a commitment to real, systemic change across levels.
Looking forward to our next chat, (because there has to be a next : ), we'll unpack these themes further. It's high time we embrace the complexity required for a truly sustainable and equitable fashion industry.

Fashion’s obsession with technology is something I've spoken about before – there’s this sentiment that often permeates the space, hyping tech to be some sort of avenue that will serendipitously save us all from the climate crisis.
From investors to the media, tech is often held up on a pedestal, and treated as though it’s going to be the reason or the way we change fashion for the better.
From my lens, there’s no golden ticket – we need so many avenues and approaches – you know, we need regulatory change and we need corporate change, and we need individual change and collective advocacy.
And as we’ve talked about before – there are so many important reasons to not only look into the future, but also to look back into history and culture. For example, we can learn so much from Indigenous practices – from farming techniques to dyeing approaches and beyond.
And when it comes to tech today, more and more information is coming out that highlights the complications that can come with these new innovations, from an equity lens – I think of some of the conversations around AI connected to the *stealing* of art, or the way some brands have used AI to generate so-called diverse models, instead of actually hiring and paying Black and Brown Indigenous models.
There’s a lot there. This week’s guest, Muchaneta ten Napel launched one of the early platforms dedicated to exploring the intersections of fashion and tech back in 2015, so she clearly has an affinity for exploring what technology can offer the fashion space. At the same time, she doesn’t buy into this sentiment that *tech will save us all* – instead, she thinks of it as one of many tools that are necessary to address fashion’s inequitable systems.
My chat with Muchaneta episode goes down an array of tangents connected to fashion – from technology to policy to media, we getting into some of the important reasons that the future of fashion is intrinsically multifaceted.
