Unlocking the Essence of Luxury
Luxury branding and marketing, as elucidated by Jean-Noel Kapferer, is a journey through time, culture, and aspiration. I just had the privilege of coming across Jean-Noel Kapferer's enlightening lecture, 'Is Luxury History,' through my professor and I couldn't help but share some profound insights. Luxury is about delivering an experience that transcends the ordinary, creating a delicate balance between aspiration and exclusivity. Luxury is a tribute to history, a universal desire, and a marker of affluence. It's a testament to the power of storytelling and the art of crafting timeless brands.
Kapferer beautifully encapsulates the duality of luxury as "the ordinary of extraordinary people AND the extraordinary of ordinary people." This dual nature is at the heart of luxury branding. Brands must strike a delicate balance, catering to both ends of the spectrum. They create aspiration while retaining exclusivity, a dance that defines luxury itself.
Kapferer's differentiation between premium and luxury is illuminating. Premium is comparative—the more you pay, the more you get. In contrast, luxury is superlative, relying on intangibles and serving as a social stratifier, signifying both wealth and taste.
The luxury business model, according to Kapferer, is a masterpiece of control, excellence, and tradition.

read this last night… a good read with some interesting observations. throughout the report, i couldn’t help but ask myself:
do the foundational rules of #luxury ever really change?
and if they don’t, can there be such a thing as new luxury?
I know new tactics are developed and applied to fit within the context of the times, but the elements of craftsmanship, heritage, dream factor, etc of a brand still determine its luxury status in my opinion.
#newbalance & #Stussy made the list, but i would consider those as premium brands and not luxury. i don’t even know if they would consider themselves to be in the luxury category.
these are just my initial thoughts, but the report is an interesting read all in all. kudos to the HS team for putting this together. 🖤
