⭐ New Theory, New Practice, and New Voices ⭐ Last week, our partner UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), founded by the indomitable Mariana Mazzucato, held its second annual #RethinkingtheState festival (https://lnkd.in/dakrKcXy) And I was honoured (and deeply humbled) to facilitate a conversation amongst four powerhouse economists – all women, most hailing from Africa or South America. Thank you to Mariana Mazzucato, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, Erika Kraemer-Mbula, and Carolina Alves for the insights, particularly when it comes to what we need to tackle the deeply systemic challenges we face today. Spoiler alert: as Mariana says, challenges such as deepening #inequality, #climate change, #nature loss are not accidental. Rather, they are the result of a dysfunctional system of corporate governance and problematic economic policies. We need a new theory of #value, and one that is grounded in practice (showing what works) and is led by new voices. As the recently launched Strategic Economics Alliance (#SEA) states: “Different #voices must be brought to the table to discuss what it means to achieve an equitable, just and sustainable economy that is co-created by actors globally. Justice according to whom? Answers must include voices from the most marginalised, whether it is Indigenous communities, women or people of colour who have been left out of the process of deciding ‘what is to be done.’” Thank you, all, for the inspiration. Now that is a power team! ... with real capability and vision to change our broken economic and governance systems and our dysfunctional habits. I salute your use of the word "indomitable" - definitely the determined spirit we need to pull that off, working together.

"⭐ New Theory, New Practice, and New Voices ⭐" Yes. You are right, Leslie. New voices joining in expeditions of inquiry through explorations in the imagination to discover and articulate a new social narrative, a new sociology of social choosing and a new social contract that will be fit to our purposes, and right for our times in the 21st Century, and beyond... We are heirs in the opening decades of the 21st Century to a narrative, sociology and social contract inherited from the closing decades of the 20th Century that is obsolete, incomplete and fundamentally flawed. We need inquiry for insight and new learning that can inform an updated and upgraded social narrative, a more complete sociology and a more correct social contract. What American filmmaker Adam McKay calls a cultural framework, when he tells us "“We can’t seem to get out of this cultural framework that we’re trapped in, that just won’t allow us to take in the enormity of it.”  What The Friends Provident Foundation calls cultural perspectives on the economy in its work to " connect, fund, support and invest in new thinking to shape a future economy that works for all". continued

Congratulations Leslie Johnston, M.Sc. and all. So inspiring! We definitely need a deep #rethinking and #reimagining of our public investment systems and our formulas for public-private collaboration to drive and structure truly regenerative investment projects that as Mariana says, also shape and create new markets. Procurement and public spending are such a powerful leverage point, yet so often poorly designed. I would love to know more about your next steps within the #SEA Alliance and how to contribute.

What an inspiring event and a thought-provoking discussion! The focus on new theories and practices in tackling systemic challenges like inequality and climate change is crucial for transformative leadership. Elevating diverse voices, particularly those from marginalized communities, is essential for crafting inclusive and sustainable economic policies.
