General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and Lockheed Martin are collaborating to provide Net-Enabled Weapons (NEW) capability for GA-ASI’s MQ-9B SeaGuardian® Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). The addition of NEW capability for SeaGuardian will bolster the Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Targeting (ISR&T) capability for the aircraft. The NEW technology provides expanded sensor targeting applications for the precision targeting of long-range weapons. SeaGuardian’s demonstrated persistence coupled with its vast array of precision targeting sensors enables more efficient kill chains, especially in contested environments. GA-ASI’s MQ-9B SeaGuardian® UAS, and SeaVue multi-role radar from Raytheon, an RTX business, will effectively leverage Lockheed Martin’s extensive NEW expertise to further refine targeting capabilities for future theater deployments. Initial testing was completed on June 5, 2024, with F/A-18s on the U.S. Navy’s W-289 test range in Southern California.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙓-47𝘽 The X-47B is an unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) developed by Northrop Grumman. It is a tailless, blended-wing aircraft designed for semi-autonomous operations and in-flight refueling. The X-47B has been in development since 2001 and has successfully completed several flight tests. It is designed to carry out a variety of missions, including surveillance, reconnaissance and attack. It is equipped with a variety of sensors, including radar, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) cameras, and a laser designator. The X-47B can also carry up to 2,700 pounds of weapons, including air-to-air missiles, air-to-surface missiles, and bombs. It has been used to demonstrate its ability to refuel in the air, a key capability for long-range missions. In 2013, the X-47B became the first drone to refuel mid-air from a Navy tanker. It is an important step forward in the development of UCAS. It is the first drone designed for semi-autonomous operations and has the potential to revolutionize the way wars are fought. Better than the laser interceptor? The microwave weapon! According to INSS Researcher Dr. Yehoshua Kalisky, the US Navy has announced it is developing a prototype weapon based on high-power microwaves. It plans to use this system on Navy ships by early 2026 and is part of its strategy to develop energy-directed weapon systems. Microwave technology was first used in World War II for radar devices and later in consumer products such as microwave ovens. The goal in developing a weapon system with a powerful microwave transmitter is to counter aerial threats, primarily unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Energy-directed weapons are developed by combining laser and microwave technologies to create complementary defense systems. While lasers focus on damaging rocket shells or missiles, by targeting specific sensitive areas, microwave-based weapons strike and cause irreversible damage to the electronic components of the target. This mechanism is effective against UAVs and drones, precision ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and even hypersonic cruise missiles. Compared to the laser beam, microwave weapons have significant operational advantages. They are cost-effective, simple weapons, with a wide operational range, and can quickly strike multiple targets. The microwave beam moves at the speed of light, but unlike the laser beam, it is wide and diffused, allowing it to hit numerous targets. The beam is not affected by environmental conditions and can be operated at long ranges. With sufficient power, it can cause damage critical components of the target. This technology presents a promising solution to protect vessels against unmanned aircraft and ballistic missiles in the near future.

Quantum-Systems Inc., the Quantum Systems US subsidiary and a leader in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aerial intelligence solutions, today announced it was awarded two contracts under DEF129-SUAS, formerly known as Land 129 Phase 4B, totaling AUD $90 million. The award, signed April 24, 2024 in Brisbane, Queensland, is comprised of an acquisition contract to provide the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with Vector/Scorpion 2-in-1 fixed-wing eVTOL small uncrewed aerial systems (SUAS) and a support contract for the provision of training, maintenance, engineering, supply and logistics, and support services. Delivery will begin April 2025 with support services continuing into 2031. The Vector 2-in-1 fixed-wing eVTOL UAS delivers real-time, high-resolution video for surveillance and reconnaissance missions. It is a rucksack portable solution that can be operational in three minutes and take-off and land in confined spaces without the need for additional tools or equipment.
