#Internship is beneficial for both the intern and the organization. It gives the intern exposure to real job challenges, leveraging ascending learning curve for young interns and also benefits organization with fresh blood and out of the box ideas coming without the constraints of normal day-to-day duties.. Obviously the #intern who achieves and proves him/herself during the internship is most likely to be hired by the organization when needed. A ready candidate who knows the business already and familiar with the company's processes, fits in the system immediately and always eager to learn and achieve..

Thank you Four Rivers Society for Human Resource Management for hosting me yesterday! Speaking to such an amazing group of leaders is always an honor. The topic was Internships. I've spoken about internships/co-ops from the perspective of a Director of Career Development, but yesterday I had the chance to share from a new perspective - a private company view. Trust me when I say, there is a big difference! Higher education professionals often only ask, "How can companies create the best experience for their interns?" However, companies have to expand the question to: "How can we create the best experience for our interns, given our current constraints?" At BFW/Marcum, we had some unique constraints this summer on our team's time, energy, and focus. Hosting 15 interns at multiple locations can be challenging enough; add moving our headquarters and launching a new logo to the mix and you create more tensions to manage. Luckily, we have a great team who rallied to provide a great internship experience! It started by developing 3 extraordinary touchpoints. The last one is today as we say thank you to our phenomenal interns at our Closing Session! It's International Youth Day! What better time to talk about an internship programme we piloted here at B&Q, partnering with the 10,000 Interns Foundation as they specialise in championing under-represented talent, at scale. We’re excited to see where internships can take us in the future! Tyler Cameron - St Luce tells us about his Internship experience with B&Q. "I am 19 years old having just finished the 1st year of my degree focused in Economics & Politics. I have always been drawn to Financial Services but also Human Resources as my passions lie in Talent, Diversity & Inclusion. The communities I represent are too often underrepresented in these corporate spaces thus I feel a moral duty to boost the socio-economic mobility of my communities. I have been fortunate to complete a HR internship at B&Q within the Talent Team sourced by 10,000 Black Interns - a phenomenal charity. I gained insight into the work of the team, the value the team brings to B&Q - opening my eyes to value I could bring if I pursued a career here. I decided to pursue B&Q’s HR Internship as I have always been curious about HR yet it’s something not taught in schools. I was also keen to develop my understanding of B&Q as an employer - not just somewhere I shop. My experience at B&Q has been a great one. I had exposure to many HR teams like: Recruitment, Employee Relations & Candidate Experience to develop a broad understanding of the HR function. I’ve learnt more about B&Q’s wider business by attending their “Heart Space Event” and “Belonging Fest”. I have massive admiration for B&Q’s D&I initiatives & efforts to be an inclusive employer. I was invited to present on my internship experience with B&Q in Kingfishers London offices boosting my professional confidence. I’ve learnt how to interact confidently with a variety of junior and senior professionals and the power of curiosity. Being curious and understanding that when mistakes come lessons follow, is the mindset that has led me through this internship - allowing me to seize every opportunity. My biggest achievement was presenting my B&Q internship experience to an audience of college students at Kingfisher’s offices - despite being in their exact shoes a year ago. I have always struggled with public speaking whilst growing up, but this experience enabled me to take account for old weaknesses and help build strength in others to pursue a career like mine. Leaving education to go to work, sometimes you often don’t know what you don’t know, an internship changes that. You find where your passions and interests lie and see where your talents can take you in a career. You interact with a variety of people and build mentors who are invaluable long-term support - for me that was Hollie Parsons & Laura Simons in my team. B&Q is a big business and there is a variety of opportunities and support here. There’s all to gain and nothing to lose through a B&Q internship, and that’s the mentality of a winner!" #BelongAtBandQ
