Give it a read to learn about the impact that legal advice can have on vulnerable people suffering hardship, and how you and your firm can help. #accesstojustice #bepartofthepicture #residualclientbalances

We are close to meeting our end-of-year fundraising goal! Just a few days left to donate. Here are three reasons we need your support today. 1. Our Training and Education program is free - and it’s going to stay that way. Our Training and Education program is funded mostly by grants and donations. We do not charge registration fees. This program has grown quickly in the past three years, serving more than 2,000 defenders every year. We are committed to ensuring these services will remain free so that all defenders have access to the training and support they need, especially in under-resourced jurisdictions. We depend on you to keep this free. 2. Costs have risen. We are determined to pay all of our staff a fair and competitive wage and provide benefits that give every team member the support that they and their families need. With inflation and a team of 14, those costs are higher than they were when ARC was working in our executive director’s basement almost ten years ago. While the costs of travel, records collection, and even client commissary have increased significantly, the fees for services that most courts authorize for our work have remained stagnant. In many of the jurisdictions where we work the rates for mitigation services have not risen in years, which means we need additional sources of support to keep our organization sustainable. 3. We have big plans to change the world. Last week, after a year of working with staff, board members, and other stakeholders, our board of directors approved a new visionary strategic plan for the future of the organization’s work. It includes programming to bring empathy, equity, and justice to all those engaged in the criminal legal system as well as leveraging mitigation to prevent future harm. All of this means that donations from you, our community, are needed today. We hope you'll make a donation to support our work. https://lnkd.in/gfdGci8r

In two weeks we have served nearly 700 households and nearly 2,000 individuals who make up those 700 households. This is a dream of three years coming to reality for our team! Over the next two months we dig into fundraising. First up is our Hurdles to Housing virtual fundraiser and on September 9th, we host our first annual “FIVE LOAVES 5K/Fun Walk” at 8am. While the Internal Revenue Service is seen as the primary watchdog to the nonprofit world, attorneys general also can investigate nonprofits, and AG investigations into nonprofits and churches are on the rise. This may be surprising, but in most states, attorneys general not only have the power to investigate nonprofits and churches, but they also have the power to render civil and criminal penalties and prosecute and remove board members. In one non-church nonprofit matter in Minnesota, the attorney general even petitioned to dissolve a nonprofit. There is certainly an overlap between an attorney general and the IRS’s involvement in investigating churches and nonprofits for financial concerns, but it seems that the attorney general’s offices are picking up in areas where the IRS is not. https://lnkd.in/ganKU88K
