Law schools are becoming more demographically diverse, but the legal field is still disproportionately white and male. As the total number of law school enrollees fell from 2010 to 2023, so did the numbers of white and Asian American students. Meanwhile, the number of Hispanic/Latino students and multiracial students grew. White students still made up 60% of students enrolled at ABA-accredited law schools in 2023, down from 66% in 2011. https://bit.ly/4cfy1oD

Meet Anaka Young! Anaka is a rising 2L at University of Cincinnati College of Law and a Justice for All Summer Clerk at Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati. Check out Anaka's Q&A profile: Q: What drove you to spend your summer doing public interest work with legal aid? A: Everyone deserves adequate representation, regardless of income. I wanted to work with legal aid because they are truly passionate about the work they do, helping as many people as they can. I came into law school wanting to do public interest work, I just wasn’t sure of which area. Legal aid has a variety of practice groups, allowing me to see a broad spectrum of potential areas of expertise. Q: What is one major goal you’d like to accomplish before finishing law school? A: Before finishing law school, I would like to have the opportunity to connect with later classes and offer advice. Of course, I am no expert, but because 1L is still fresh for me, I can give my two cents on what to do and not to do. As a first generation law student, I would not have made it this far without people doing the same for me, so I would like to help others navigate the process as I know how overwhelming and daunting it can be. Q: What do you see as the most compelling social justice issue facing our communities? A: Racial injustice is a huge issue that hits close to home. The color of my skin is something I am judged for daily, regardless of anything else I bring to the table. This has always been an issue, and it will continue to take years to see progress. But if we can work to change the narrative and change the stereotypes, hopefully we will start to see a shift in representation See all of our summer clerks bit.ly/3rlTndR

June is just around the corner, which means ES Scholars (my favorite DEI program) is close enough to touch! Not only does our 3 week summer pipeline program prepare participants for the rigors of law school through two weeks of actual classes run by our amazing Emory law school professor, but it (i) helps participants understand how big law firms work, (ii) provides insight on areas of practice, (iii) helps build interviewing, networking, and resume drafting skills, and (iv) gives participants an understanding of the differences between law firm and in-house legal team careers. This is one post that really should be shared far and wide. 🙂
The #ESScholars 2024 application is here! Established in 2005, ES Scholars is a three-week summer intensive program open to all (with a preference for those already admitted to law school) and designed to introduce people from backgrounds underrepresented within the legal industry to a career in law. With cohorts in Atlanta, Washington DC and New York, the program curriculum consists of: → An introduction to contracts, legal writing and bluebooking classes taught by an Emory law professor. → Panel discussions on a variety of topics including navigating one’s law school experience, insight into the law firm recruitment process, exploring in-house careers with our client partner, and much more! → Networking with fellow ES Scholars, ES Scholars Alums, Eversheds Sutherland attorneys and other legal professionals. Find more information about the program and the application here: https://lnkd.in/ezuggZSw
