Reid Hoffman asked me (and others) to offer some advice to graduates entering our new world of work. Here goes: There are two types of fulfillment: Outer fulfillment and Inner fulfillment. Outer fulfillment is wealth, status, advancement….a fancy-looking Linkedin profile. Inner fulfillment is purpose, meaning, inner joy…what my ancestors referred to as your "Dharma". There's nothing wrong with Outer fulfillment. It's totally fine to achieve big things and want nice things. So long as you understand one truth: Outer fulfillment will never lead you to Inner fulfillment. We've been conditioned to believe that if we could just get that next job, promotion, raise, car, home, relocation…somehow that thing from the outside will make us feel whole on the inside. And it never does. All the water in the world won't fill a bucket with a hole in the bottom. So here's my advice: reverse the flow. Instead of trying to find fulfillment from the outside-in…discover it from the inside-out. Figure out what makes you come alive, then devote yourself to that craft like a sacred duty. If you do, your days will be filled with more energy, more creativity, more kindness (to others and yourself). And when you reach that state, outer fulfillment will follow.
