PTO is important. You've worked for and earned every minute of your time off and it should be respected. But, if you're checking emails or taking calls, it's *not* PTO and it *is* your bad. Leading by example. This was to be my catch-up from a full week of PTO. But Monday's surgeon consult for my daughter turned into "I have an opening tomorrow". There went my week. All those Q2 planning meetings pushed. Most one-on-ones cancelled. No catching up this week. But this wrecked week was a chance to lead by example. We have Open PTO and everything starts at the top. I made sure I followed our best practices and posted I would be out of the office. I cancelled all meetings where I couldn't be 100% present. I put my family over work as best as I know how. (your employees, coworkers, and bosses are not your family) As a leader, you must act the way you want others to act. The irony of all this is my wife is a teacher and she is out of vacation so any time off is unpaid. Schools have zero flexibility, rules are rules. So for all the haters of Open PTO, well, I and everyone of my employees can take all the time we need and this week was my time to lead by example. #leadership #openpto #wreckedweeks 👨⚕️Follow #CEOPeter, he's not a doctor, has a good idea or three. Unlimited PTO is a hot topic right now and rightfully so. It sounds pretty great. Problem is, it almost never works. Why? The same companies that offer it are terrible at implementing it. They don't let their people come up for air, and the collective guilt trip issued when PTO is taken makes it pretty darn uncomfortable for employees to use it. What good is "unlimited" PTO if it's totally inaccessible? Here's our alternative: 3 weeks of total office closure -- 4th of July week, Thanksgiving week, and Christmas through New Year's Day (essentially mandated breaks!) -- combined with weeks of earned PTO we actually encourage you to take by helping you map out your time off in advance. First year teammates, regardless of position within the company, get 5 full weeks of time off (PTO+office closures), and the time off grows from there.
