ATT: Chief AI Officers, AI Product Mgrs. & Teams! Been tasked with unlocking the potential of AI for your company but it feels like the 'wild west?' If so, here are 4 essentials to create more wins, more quickly with less waste (aka losing money): 1. Start testing use cases right from the start. No value is delivered by AI until users or customers adopt an AI product. You’re going to have to address adoption eventually, so give yourself as much time as possible to test and shape use cases. Avoid the temptation to spend months or years working only on architecture and security – test uses cases while you are building these out. 2. Establish a framework for testing use cases. Without a common framework based on evidence instead of opinions, it’s difficult to make good decisions about which AI use cases to invest in. Make it clear what level of evidence (e.g. verbal feedback, adoption during observational studies, etc.) is required for an AI use case to be considered for investment. Bonus: a common framework results in a portfolio view that enables you to demonstrate progress and articulate the value of your work, even in the earliest stages of development. 3. Make sure you communicate “the why” of the framework. Nobody likes process until they understand why the process is in place. Make it clear that the framework is in place to establish a meritocracy that lets the good use cases through and parks the losing use cases based on common standards with as few resources wasted as possible. Stress that the framework is in place to de-politicize the identification of AI use cases that will be scaled. 4. Make sure everyone knows their role in the framework. Wasted time, effort, and resources result when AI product owners, AI product teams, and senior AI executives don’t know their specific roles in the framework. Give each role in your framework a “cheat sheet” so they can remember their roles and responsibilities.
