CEO & Founder at Wildflower Health

Spent a lively afternoon talking about women’s health with my friend Joanna Strober at a convening assembled by Oliver Wyman. Over the course of the afternoon, I think it became apparent what’s needed to transform women’s health from a care ecosystem perspective. We need a lifetime of care model tuned to women inclusive of both the issues that uniquely impact women but also the gender-agnostic conditions that show up differently for women. We need to extend beyond strictly clinical definitions of health to address the whole person, keeping in mind the caregiving and parenting stressors that more often burden women. We need a ladder of professionals from the non-clinical navigator to the NP to the MD, accessible via multiple channels, all well versed in the unique care dynamics that women face. The question that we couldn’t get past this afternoon was not the what but the how, and specifically how this type of vision for women’s care gets funded or invested in, given reimbursement realities and the economics of our healthcare system. While I think we have found that path at Wildflower solely in pregnancy (where value based care can be applied rather easily), I think it’s a much bigger challenge for broader women’s care. But it’s a challenge worth solving and fighting for.

“Lifetime of care” model - does anyone have that framework or graphic? Would love to collaborate on that!

I think we should create a new model around healthcare access and delivery solely around women (inclusive.) We can use the opportunity to get rid of some bad structural incentives (fee for service) and try some new things (health centers organized around patient goals, not provider preferences.) It's not like it hasn't been done before - we built the current system around men's health ;)

Absolutely agree. A comprehensive, integrated, multi disciplinary care model for women from puberty, through maternity, menopause, disease management and beyond. Where payers see the long term value in investing in preventive health and holistic wellness. This is not only possible but essential.

Leah, this is solid work. Getting funding lined up is tough, but the value is clear. It’s not just healthcare; it’s health ‘care’ in the truest sense. Big props to you and the team for pushing this forward!♥️

We need to establish the Wildflower Health Institute, a 501 (c) 3 organization to attract funding to further explore & prototype new solutions for women’s health

The “funny “ icon tagged - and I can’t get it to go away. Clearly NOT funny for any who follow my comments! Insightful. Reinforcing. And the HOW gets us way too often!

So glad to see that there is momentum to get past ‘women’s sexual and reproductive health’ = ‘women’s health’! This is such a reductive view of women’s health!
