Investors love meaningful data. 🥓 Sell the Sizzle: less frequently used, but if you have an All-star founding/executive team, showcase it off the bat! The vast majority of investments made at this stage are pre-product or meaningful revenue and consequently, investors are placing bets specifically on the founders. I have had several discussions with Fund managers recently, where the time it takes to be an active and supporting board member, is a potential bottleneck. When it comes to formulating strategies and gaining industry insights, it's imperative to enlist the right individuals onto the board, just as you would when building the operational team. The importance of aligning the board and its expertise with the portfolio company's needs cannot be emphasized enough. Bring in non-invested board members with the expertise and network at the right stage of growth, could be the game-changer to be able to step up the next level. I’m getting ready for our annual family business event. I’ll be moderating the main panel on unlocking growth at family businesses. I’m also working on a story on the same topic. Here’s what I’m wondering, when it comes to having a growing business, what advantages or disadvantages do family businesses have over other ownership models like those backed by private equity, venture capital or public shareholders? Timeline: Family businesses can think in generations versus working for the next quarter or the next sale in a few years. That can be good, you can make investments that take years to pay off, but do you lose a sense of urgency? People and culture: Family businesses can have a family culture. That can be good when you care for employees and go the extra mile. At the same time, families can have their own dynamics and dysfunction. Access to capital: Corporations or PE backed businesses may have access to more resources. On the other hand, a family owner may bring more patient capital to the equation.
