One of the most discussed items within the foundation is evaluating the impact of our giving. There are many factors. Social issues, geography, short term vs long term and what constitutes meaningful impact. Over the last two weeks the LAZ Charitable Foundation sponsored an international medical team to go to Ukraine. The organizer of this event was Global Cardiac Alliance. An organization that has performed over 20,000 congenital heart surgeries in 22 developing countries. During those two weeks, they performed lifesaving open heart surgery on infants as young as 2 days old. I don’t know how you measure the value of providing a meal to 10,000 kids or directly saving the life of a newborn. I can tell you that 9 Ukrainian children will now have an excellent chance of a full life. I thank Ali Dodge-Khatami, Jessica Wendling, William Novick, Andriana Anagnostopoulou, Isabel Cambel, Siarhei Liauchonak and the staff at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital in L’viv, Ukraine for their dedication and compassionate hearts.
