"Big Law Is Growing in Miami—And These Firms Are Outpacing the Rest" Miami's legal landscape is evolving rapidly, becoming one of the hottest Big Law markets since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the firms making significant strides, Kirkland & Ellis, Sidley Austin, and Winston & Strawn are outpacing the competition with their aggressive growth strategies. Fastest Growing Firms: → Winston & Strawn LLP: Launched in 2022 with six lateral partner hires and has grown to 37 attorneys in just two years. The firm's chair, Steve D’Amore, highlights that the impact of these investments will continue to grow as these new practices integrate fully. → Kirkland & Ellis: Started with four partners and expanded to 41 attorneys last year. The firm doubled its summer associate program, showcasing its commitment to building a strong talent pool in Miami. → Sidley Austin LLP: Reported 15 lawyers at the end of 2022 and has since expanded to 40 lawyers. The original partners remain based in Miami, indicating a long-term commitment to the market. Moderate Growth and Stability: → Polsinelli: Opened in 2019, initially with six attorneys, and now has 23. The firm has taken a slower, more steady approach to growth. → Quinn Emanuel: Launched its Miami office in 2021 with 10 lawyers and has grown to 16. Despite some internal movement, the firm maintains a consistent presence in Miami. Firms Adjusting Strategies: → King & Spalding: Opened with 37 lawyers in 2022, now lists 31 due to fluctuations based on trial activity. The firm remains committed to Miami, increasing the number of lawyers barred in Florida from 50 to almost 70. → Morrison Foerster: Transitioning to a hybrid model and closing its Miami office later this year. Despite this, the firm remains dedicated to servicing its clients in Miami. In a year of falling M&A deal flow, King & Spalding and Alston & Bird have held their own in the latest league tables. King & Spalding rose in the U.S. deal rankings, and Alston & Bird maintained its position from 2022 for the number of M&A deals completed in the Americas in the first nine months of 2023, according to the Q3 results from Refinitiv of the London Stock Exchange. Just as in many previous quarters, King & Spalding and Alston & Bird were the only Georgia-founded firms ranked in the league tables.
