The majority of victims are terrified to speak up and most domestic abuse victims are afraid to call the police. As law enforcement's response to domestic violence evolves, officers face a critical challenge: Many women are afraid to call police. And when police do finally respond, an already dangerous situation often is laced with peril for everyone involved. A majority of victims feared that calling law enforcement would make the situation worse, resulting in a slap on the wrist for the abuser and potential negative consequences for the victim. It’s important to not use whether someone called the police as a proxy for whether or not they’re abused. I offer training's to the police in how to better handle all situations surrounding domestic violence, to find out more click here: https://buff.ly/2YFMPqg #drlaura #drlauracounseling #police #lawenforcement #abusiverelationships #domesticviolence #domesticviolenceawareness #domesticviolencesurvivor #domesticviolenceadvocate #domesticviolenceprevention #domesticviolenceisreal #domesticviolencesupport #domesticviolencerecovery #wifebeatershirtoptional

I’m attending the Targeted Community Prevention Conference today. The primary audience is clearly law enforcement agencies. This conference is intended to shine a spotlight on Mass Shootings and acts of domestic terrorism. What surprises me is the very clear correlation to this massive acts of community violence and domestic violence. A disturbing percentage of these devastating events begin with an incident of domestic violence or the preparator has a lengthy history of domestic violence. And yet with this evidence being clear, law enforcement and the judicial system still has a propensity to dismiss domestic violence and blame victims. Perhaps if we took domestic violence more seriously we could reduce the frequency of these massive destructive events. #domesticviolence #massshooting
