3 years ago, I played my last hand of poker as a high-stakes pro to start a business. Initially, I believed I had no skills. But it's taken me some time to realise that playing poker for a living for 11 years taught me these 3 wonderful skills: 1. Emotional Control Mistakes happen, and things never go according to plan, especially in business. But poker taught me to roll with the punches. You accept the mistake, review what you could do better next time and move on. 2. Thinking for myself Playing poker gave me the confidence to trust myself, my reads, and my decisions. Yes, I believed I had no skills when I started my first business, but I didn't care about what other people thought and trusted that I was capable enough to figure things out (eventually). 3. Adaptive strategy Your edge in poker comes from anticipating, adapting and adjusting to your opponents. You've got to be open with your poker strategy based on listening to other players and population tendencies. And this has transferred over to business and marketing strategies. I recently saw a strategy deck from a marketer who previously worked at a big-name agency. The strategy tried to apply a big-brand comms strategy to a micro-niche community brand. If the strategist took a second to think about the landscape, they'd realise the big brand strategy doesn't work. I see it a lot. Strategists take this "to a man with a hammer; everything looks like a nail" approach to things. Good strategy answers these two questions: Where to play and how to win? And this is how I managed to find my edge and succeed in poker for so long.

As a nature of my job, folks are always asking about management strategies. One of my go-to answers is : If I could make one rule for all companies and studios, it'd be this: let's all get together and play some games. Why? Well, it's a great way to see how people understand goals. Are they team players or lone wolves? Do they steal others' thunder? How do they back each other up? And most importantly, what's their end game? Are they in it for fun and friendship or just the win, no matter what? What else do you reckon playing games can bring to the table?

Every social interaction is a game. Games have objectives and we must take actions to accomplish the objectives (or "win" the game). So when we are interacting with people, we can think about what our objective is: - Get buy-in. - Build a relationship. - Reach an agreement. - Influence decision making. If we know our objective, then we know there are actions we can take that move us closer or further away from it. So before we respond to others in anger or frustration, we can ask ourselves: - Is this going to help me win this game? - Is this going to help me get closer to my objective? Now we'll have a little more clarity on what to do next.

𝗪𝗛𝗢 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 It shouldn’t be like this, but it is. When you know someone with either formal or informal power, you too acquire power by association. Last month, in my talk at the CMI Victoria breakfast, my topic was 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆.This topic was chosen because many change practitioners ask – how can I get things done when I don’t have positional authority, or very few people know who I am? While there are a few ways to boost your visibility (see link to post in comments), one fast way is via your network. I told the story about how I ‘enjoyed’ this unplanned boost while playing pub poker. Tournament Poker, for newbies, can be intimidating. Seasoned players have no hesitation in taking advantage of your inexperience. In fact, poker coaches advise players to exploit the naivety to knock out opponents. It’s motivating to learn fast, and the best way to learn at a face-to-face poker game. But I wasn’t expecting to see the benefits of ‘informal power’ work for me so quickly. Let me introduce Bruno*. This former body-building champion has been playing for decades and rules the pub poker venues in my region. Imagine a person who carries the presence of Omar Sharif or Marlon Brando. He is the person who arrives for late registration. While he ‘glides’ over to his assigned table, people look up from their tables (and their cards) to say hello to him. I knew Bruno liked poker but never expected to see him appear at one of the lower stake games. On this night, Bruno stopped at our table to say hello to me, ask how my family was going and how nice it was to see me playing poker. The younger dudes on my table were clearly gob-smacked. They fired a chorus of questions about how do I know Bruno, how well do I know him, for how long, are we related… And so…these same players who were eye-rolling and sniggering about me being a beginner, how I needed some guidance on dealing, betting correctly and acting in turn…changed their demeanour very quickly. They became friendlier and more helpful. We have seen this happen in the workplace. When you build a relationship with someone who has more formal, informal or perceived power than yourself, you feel more confident. People notice the connections. In turn, confidence helps you perform better. 👉 How does ‘power by association’ work for you? 👉 How do you build your own ‘informal power’? * Not his real name. To be or not to be a poker player… A professional poker player at that! Do I really want to go pro and turn this into a career? My income? My way of life!? All questions I have been asking myself for years, when I got turned onto poker, after it got big and appeared on TV. A sports channel to be specific. Like wait, is poker considered a sport?? I mean, it definitely is a competition. It’s not you against the “house”, it’s you against another player. multiple players actually. Every man for them self, and there can only be one! Lol. If that’s not competitive, what is?? To make it even more crazy, the game is played with money! You don’t need a pair of sneakers, some knee braces, jersey and a ball. You can wear whatever you want, hell, even. some flip flops. All you need is your wallet! Lol. And this ain’t no big bank takes lil bank type of game. This game involves all skill and maybe a tad bit of luck, if you believe in that sort of thing. Does that not sound like a fun game or what?? Forgive me, I meant sport! I caught the bug early with this one. As soon as I learned how to play and experienced the competitive aspect, I knew I was going to be all in. No pun intended. It really peaked my interest when I watched the World Series of Poker on TV. I used to be a big basketball head, with aspirations to make it to the league. But when that fell thru, I just went thru life doing the normal 9 to 5 thing and coming home and doing it all over again. I felt like I was missing something that gave me drive and purpose. Me being the competitive person I am, I needed that fix, and when I saw the words “World Series” attached to this card game. I lit up like a candle! And let’s not forget to mention that the grand prize was a big shiny bracelet up for grabs for the champion. AKA, your championship trophy, super bowl ring, to put on your shelf or wear around to show off the skills. You’re telling me I can compete in a sport on national TV, and I don’t have to be 6’6 or be in tip top shape to compete?? Sign me up!! The only thing that set me back was my income. Unfortunately, you do have to have a bankroll to participate in this event. So, it took some time to get into a comfortable position to really take this seriously. But after years of honing my skills playing for fun, or let’s say low stakes. I’m finally ready!! Follow my journey to becoming a Professional Poker Player and making it to the World Series Main Event. I’m coming for the Gold, and I hope to encourage some people to give it go along the way.
