I love Visual Capitalist's visualizations and this one showing #carbon emissions since the industrial age is fascinating. As we ramp up #sustainability efforts and reduce #CO2 emissions, important to know when and where emissions started rising.

The Energy Progress Report 2023 by International Energy Agency (IEA) details the advancements made towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7, which ensures access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. SDG7 emphasizes sustainable energy practices which are crucial for mitigating climate change. The past decade saw notable energy intensity improvements – yet they remained well below the target set under SDG7. It is critical that subsequent improvements are more aggressive to compensate for previous gaps. This way, we can move one step closer to achieving SDG7 goals by the target date of 2030. Two optimistic perspectives I haven't seen yet about this trending post: 1. Some countries, such as the UK, have dropped their emissions to that of the 1800s (1880s for the UK)! 2. Some countries, such as the USA and Russia, may still be main polluters but they've also decreased their emissions in recent years! The numbers are staggering at initial viewing, but let's look at the trends. Environmental initiatives are working. It may not be perfect yet. We still have a lot of solutions to discover and deliberate. But, above all, our individual, government, corporate, and global efforts are working! Let's keep it up and keep pushing.

The EU accounts for about 8% of global energy-related emissions. While it obviously cannot solve the global climate-change problem on its own, it could position itself as a global leader and serve as an example for other countries and regions if it can come close to achieving its commitments. Still, fulfilling those commitments would require an unprecedented effort, and the current speed and scale of the transition would need to increase significantly. From 2019 to 2021, EU power sector emissions decreased at less than half the rate necessary to stay on track for a 1.5°C pathway. The European Union would now need to triple its current pace of renewable-energy-source deployment to avoid a less orderly transition, which would be far more costly and damaging to the economy and the environment than one that balances affordability, reliability, resilience, and security. McKinsey’s report has identified five action areas that EU nations could consider to accelerate the energy transition in an orderly manner: 1. creating resilient, at-scale supply chains for key decarbonization technologies 2. building out the energy grid infrastructure to support resilience and reduce barriers to in-region renewables 3. reexamining land use, societal, and regulatory constraints to accelerate the development of renewables 4. redesigning power markets in line with decarbonization and affordability objectives 5. ensuring the affordability of clean technologies to foster their adoption and accelerate the energy transition    #energytransition #netzero https://lnkd.in/d7amFKN6
