April is Earth Month. During this time, we all have the opportunity to reflect on our actions and the impact those actions have on our planet. By adopting more sustainable practices, we can minimize our impact on the environment. At Co-op, sustainability is woven into much of what we do. That is why we have set the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent of 2015 levels by 2030. We are aspiring to be net neutral by 2050.

Big things are happening! We’re celebrating an important milestone in our sustainability journey. 🌍 The Science Based Targets initiative has validated our greenhouse gas emission reduction target for FY2030, confirming that it aligns with the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as outlined in the Paris Agreement. Striving towards a brighter, low-carbon future, we've prioritized climate action in our Sustainable Value Plan 2030, aiming to: ✅ Reduce GHG emissions by 50% from our operations and across the entire product lifecycle (compared to FY2019 levels). Armed with our Green Value Climate Strategy, we aim to bring it to life and ensure the lasting impact by promoting more eco-friendly production practices and offering outstanding environmental performance of products and services. It’s a turning point that reflects our dedication to protecting the environment and responsible business practices. I recently came across a workshop focused on climate grief, which is the first time I've seen such an acknowledgment of the losses individuals and communities are beginning to experience. With the recent storms and flooding in the UK, there's a growing emergence of climate grief and climate anxiety. It's becoming increasingly important to have open conversations and provide support for people and communities as they navigate these experiences. As we witness the direct impacts of climate change, it's also crucial to extend support to the children we teach who may be experiencing climate anxiety and witnessing climate change first hand. By acknowledging their concerns and offering guidance, we can help them navigate these challenging times with resilience and understanding. This support may involve creating safe spaces for discussions, providing accurate information about climate change, and empowering them to take positive actions towards environmental stewardship.
