The future of agriculture is so bright!

Happy Intern Day! In the course of the past two months, it has been fun and interesting to work with and get to know some of our interns. For many (maybe all?) this is their first fully in-person job experience. When I contrast our intern program this summer with my son's internship with Coke during the pandemic, it's like night and day. Both positive experiences, but very different. I know there is still a lot of discussion around #returntooffice and in our business that discussion usually focuses a lot on investment in office buildings. I wonder the long-term impact on young careers of in-person vs. work from anywhere vs. hybrid internships and early work experience.

Once again this year, the BLX Internship Program has a major problem on its hands: Too many talented, diverse interns and not enough firms to take them on. The program was founded in late 2020 by a group of four advisors who wanted to see the industry more accurately reflect the nation it serves. Known as BLX for short, the organization's goal is to provide an opportunity for underrepresented financial planners to secure internships at independent financial planning firms. "Unfortunately, we won't be able to place every applicant because we just don't have that many firms," co-founder Luis Rosa said. "The way it's looking with the number of applications, even if half are qualified applicants, we're still only able to place about a fraction of the qualified applicants." As the COO of McKinley Rice, I've had the privilege of witnessing the journey of many talented interns who aspire to kickstart their careers. While their enthusiasm is commendable, it's disheartening to see a recurring pattern of unpreparedness among some of them. I often come across unprepared aspirants, who write appealing emails, but their efforts of standing on those big, written words often withdraw as soon as they land the role.  What's the deal, you ask? Well, here's what I've observed: 🔹 Punctuality? Often a struggle. 🔹 Right tools/devices? Not always on hand. 🔹 Leaving early? More common than you'd think. 🔹 Leaves aplenty? Sometimes, it feels like a forest! But here's the real question: Why? Is it a lack of seriousness when it comes to learning or something deeper that calls their ethics into question? #Internships are an incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and pave the way for a successful career. Yet, it's vital for interns to approach them with dedication, respect for the workplace, and a commitment to honing their skills. Let's remember, that internships are a two-way street. Companies invest time and resources in nurturing future talent, and interns benefit by gaining invaluable experience.
