The latest Invisible Condition podcast episode had me thinking about the stories we have that we may want to share with others. Sophia Lim-Metz shared openly and vulnerably about her life living with mental health challenges and this sparked a thought: What are some practical ways for us to prepare and share our personal stories when we’re feeling ready? If you want to start sharing your story with the people around you, here are a few things to consider, based on input from my podcast guests: • Get Clear on Why You Want to Share: sharing is vulnerable but it can also be powerful. Getting clear on the reasoning behind sharing may light that fire in you! • Start with Someone You Trust: Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or counsellor who understands and supports you. • Use “I” Statements: Communicate your feelings with "I" statements like "I feel overwhelmed" or "I need help." This helps create understanding and empathy. • Remember, there's no rush to share, you can choose to share as much or as little as you want. If you decide to share with others, some may offer unsolicited advice, not understand or dismiss you. But that’s on them, not you. For those who are on the receiving end, remember that you don’t need to know how to respond. Simply say, “Thank you for trusting me with this, is there any way I can support you?” That’s it!
