🌐✨ Key Insights from Today's Sixth Intersessional Meeting of the Human Rights Council on Human Rights and 2030 Agenda, on Integrating Human Rights into the International Financial Architecture Reforms: A Cornerstone for Realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and a Human Rights Economy.   Today’s discussion focused on how international financial institutions (IFI) policies, operations, analyses, and metrics could be aligned with the human rights obligations of Member States and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.   OHCHR: Global Progress on reducing poverty and achieving SDGs is facing unprecedented challenges. The number of people living in extreme poverty is rising, and over 750 million lack adequate food. Developing countries bear the brunt of multiple crises, revealing shortcomings in the global financial system. Recognizing this, the UN Secretary-General has called for urgent reforms in international financial architecture stating that:   “The international financial architecture is “outdated, dysfunctional and unjust…” and must “evolve in a giant leap towards global justice”. Antonio Guterres    High Commissioner Volker Türk stated in his opening remarks:   “In the wake of the pandemic, countries are drowning even deeper in debt. Developing nations carry the biggest burden. They pay interest rates up to eight times higher than developed countries, pushing them into debt distress. Yet there is still no multilateral legal framework which could ensure sovereign debt crises are resolved fairly, swiftly, and effectively.” Volker Türk   Now is the time to prioritize human rights in international financial, debt, and tax systems. The recent leak of the draft Briefing Book from the Department for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) for the next European Commission has, understandably, caused uproar among civil society and development actors in Brussels this week. The proposal suggests a paradigm shift in the EU’s development aid cooperation- a shift that will see the EU’s ODA move from being focused on strong value-based partnerships to one centered around the economic interests of the Union. This shift represents yet another step in the wrong direction. A step that risks harming not only the important progress made towards the achievement of the globally agreed targets of the 17 SDGs but a step that will with certainty have serious impacts on the future of millions of children worldwide.  At Save the Children, my colleagues and I are deeply concerned about this change of direction, disregard of partner countries’ priorities by DG INTPA, who are entrusted with supporting them on their path to sustainable development, and the lack of interest in improving people’s lives. Children around the world will be the first to feel the impact of DG INTPA’s new economic orientation. At Save the Children, we see daily how children are always the first to be affected and bear the brunt when crisis strikes. Their vulnerability underscores the need for the EU’s continued leadership in addressing inequalities and charting global path for the protection of fundamental rights and particularly the rights of children. The EU must not abandon its core founding values and ensure its international cooperation contributes towards equitable, resilient, and prosperous world for generations to come.

Does anything ever get done at the UNGA? Great question. Although the UNGA has a reputation for “generating more hot air than real action,” it has seen some successes. One of the UNGA’s earliest achievements was to agree on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, outlining global standards for human rights. More recently, in 2015, the assembly scored a major win in negotiating the UN Global Goals (or SDGs) — 17 goals that provide a roadmap to ending extreme poverty through tackling its systemic causes, such as hunger, lack of education access, inequality, lack of access to water and sanitation, and more. #FardeenPro #globalcitizen #KikaoCultures #TheGlobalBlueprint #EdutainmentBD #bottomup #YNOTCampaign

📆 25-31 May - International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories This week, we recognize the vital importance of supporting Non-Self-Governing Territories (#NSGTs) in their journey toward self-governance. As outlined in Chapter XI of the UN Charter, administering powers bear a "sacred trust" to promote the well-being and self-determination of these territories' inhabitants. Since 1946, significant progress has been made in #decolonization, with many #territories achieving #independence. However, 17 territories still seek self-governance today. Let's reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding their #rights and #resources. Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week. This year's theme, 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue. There have been many moments in Australia’s reconciliation journey that make us want to turn away. But when things are divisive, the worst thing we can do is disengage or disconnect. Now more than ever, we need to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation. We know that the 6.2 million Australians who voted YES are committed to better outcomes for First Nations people, and are with us. Reconciliation supporters must stand up to defend and uphold the rights of First Nations peoples. To call out racism wherever we encounter it, and to actively reinforce the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across this continent. Now more than ever, the work continues. In treaty making, in truth-telling, in understanding our history, in education, and in tackling racism. We need connection. We need respect. We need action.
