I love Laura Fravel ‘s focus on the INFLUENCE + EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION link. Another way I like to think about this is to focus on personal “story” (both the stories we tell ourselves, and the ones we share with the world). That piece is the first — and often the most critical — building block for both creating and sustaining personal influence. It can also mean “editing” that story to emphasize those elements that serve us best and most effectively. The better we understand our stories, the better we’ll be at connecting with our audience. Storytelling…? Or experiences…? Which has greater impact? As a Leaders/Teams Communications Consultant, I’m always concerned about helping my clients have greater IMPACT. So when I was invited to speak at the Applied Improvisation Network global conference in Vancouver, I made a last-minute switch to my presentation. I had planned to tell stories to illustrate my points. Because stories ARE impactful! Humans are wired for story – we don’t remember DATA, but we DO remember stories. But you know what’s MORE impactful?  EXPERIENCES. So I adjusted my presentation . I cut out a bunch of stories (waahh! 😭) so I could spend more time leading people through an experiential ACTIVITY. I was blown away by how many people came up to me afterwards to share how much my presentation impacted them. And honestly, the first thing that went through my head?    “Me?”    Do we see ourselves the way others see us? Not usually. We underestimate the influence and impact we can have.
