Let's make our sustainable, net zero aligned resource recovery and engineering designs honest this #WorldEnvironmentDay and every day. Life cycle analysis (LCA) is not just a subject at university, or something those academics can figure out. It is an obligation on all of us as professionals, designers, suppliers and circular product makers - from cellulose to CHP, from effluent heat to hydrogen, from inlet screens to outfall structures and everything in between. We should make our claims about sustainability and #netzero alignment and #lowcarbon with evidence in an #EnvironmentalProductDeclaration (EPD) or with proof in an LCA (or clear admission that we are working on this). Recognition of gaps and uncertainty is 💯 ok. The good news - this is entirely possible and will help us make the only true 'best value' solutions, will help us take #climateactionnow and act to bring humanity back within #planetaryboundaries. The urgency of the low carbon transition was at the forefront of the Net Zero Construction Summit today, with well needed discussion around the construction industries contribution. The key themes of the day were around Collaboration, Consistency and Circularity. Collaboration: not just across the value chain between government, designers, contractors and suppliers but within each of those groups as well. There was a great reference to the criticality of safety culture facilitating knowledge sharing beyond typical competitive boundaries for common advancement, and the need to do the same with the carbon challenge. Consistency: to make sure that everyone is speaking the same language and measuring the same things with the same quality, to provide apples to apples comparisons and confidence in decision making. Circularity: acknowledging the need for systems thinking beyond 'carbon blinkers', to other planetary boundaries and the parallel driver of nature related risks. Circular economy principles provide benefits across all of these areas and there are some great case studies of the value creation it can provide. The pace of change is accelerating but there are still clear challenges and we need it to do so even faster, so looking forward to see what the rest of 2024 brings. #NZC24

Excited to share a recently published paper by my McKinsey colleagues on the opportunities to achieve circularity in the built environment (in collaboration with the World Economic Forum). The built environment currently accounts for one third of global material consumption and 40% of greenhouse gas emissions.
