The urgency of the low carbon transition was at the forefront of the Net Zero Construction Summit today, with well needed discussion around the construction industries contribution.
The key themes of the day were around Collaboration, Consistency and Circularity.
Collaboration: not just across the value chain between government, designers, contractors and suppliers but within each of those groups as well. There was a great reference to the criticality of safety culture facilitating knowledge sharing beyond typical competitive boundaries for common advancement, and the need to do the same with the carbon challenge.
Consistency: to make sure that everyone is speaking the same language and measuring the same things with the same quality, to provide apples to apples comparisons and confidence in decision making.
Circularity: acknowledging the need for systems thinking beyond 'carbon blinkers', to other planetary boundaries and the parallel driver of nature related risks. Circular economy principles provide benefits across all of these areas and there are some great case studies of the value creation it can provide.
The pace of change is accelerating but there are still clear challenges and we need it to do so even faster, so looking forward to see what the rest of 2024 brings. #NZC24
